Hi!  Here some of us are with our classroom objects that we are writing descriptive paragraphs about!  We now love speaking in sentences while adding in "colorful words", picking out the subjects and predicates, and just making our sentences so much more interesting!

We are busy writing and learning how to edit our writings.  I want the children to see how very much they can improve their ideas.....If possible, could you have your child bring in a blue, green, or purple pen to use for this purpose.  Preferably not red as I do not want them to think they are making corrections everywhere- just improvements (smile).

Expandables!!!!!!!!  The kids seem to all be very excited about their "new best friend" (their expandable)!  We organized those who had them today and will do the rest as they come in.  Agendas and "blue sheets"  will be kept in the front section.  Extra paper will be in the back compartment for the kids to use.  I had the kids bring home the extra glue sticks, pencils, etc, for them to keep there as needed throughout the year.

In Social Studies, we will be starting our unit on Government (local, state, national), the three branches, checks and balances, and exploring how some of our government buildings match those in ancient Greece.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ancientgreece/main_menu.shtml  This is the BBC site we were on the other day that the kids loved.  Lots of great information on Ancient Greece and the Olympics.

We will soon be starting our Mini-Economy Jobs.  Any gently used or new items that you would like to donate for the auctions we will be having throughout the year  would be greatly appreciated.  The students are very excited about spending their well-earned money!

A great educational site........Funbrain.com!

Ask about "Bagels", our new class pet and excellent ActivBoard washer!  Picture below of Bagle's in action........smile!

No Spelling contract this week- we will just have spelling words, but no contract......Enjoy the short week!. When we do have spelling contracts, I hand them out on Mondays and we all go over the directions together.  The same directions are written on it for you to see as well.  They are due on Friday. We will be having a spelling quiz this week.  Our new list will be handed out on Monday.  We are going to be reading The Boxcar Children: Mystery of the Hidden Painting over the next week and a half.

We look forward to starting our Mystery reader program. The kids greatly look forward to seeing who is going to pop in on that day.  You are more than welcome to be as creative as you would like.......dressing up is completely fine.  Remember, the kids are so incredibly excited to just see and listen to you.  You do not have to bring a treat. However, if you choose to, a healthy one would be preferred (smile).

As the year continues on, we find ourselves in need of some items.....If you are able to donate these items, that would be fabulous!

***** Thank you so much to those of you who donated the printer cartridges.  We have a nice supply now and I am so excited! Thank you, again, for donating the HP 78 (color) and 45 (black and white) for our classroom printer.

Pre-sharpened pencils (3rd graders have this tendency to eat them while working- an amazing feat to witness!).

Any cool facts books- our class loves reading about world records.

Nature magazines or National Geographics that you would not mind donating to the class. I am going to begin our poetry unit in April and I would love to have the kids be able to do most of the work in class using these resources.
