The Guardian , Charlottetown, PEI, Jan.3, 2012 OTTAWA —Charlottetown lawyer Daphne Dumont has been appointed a member of the Order of Canada. She was one of 37 members, 28 officers and one companion of the Order of Canada named Friday. Dumont was honoured for her contributions as a lawyer and volunteer with various legal associations. In 2009, Dumont was one of six laureates awarded the Governor Generals' Award in commemoration of the Person's Case. Dumont earned her law degree at Oxford University in 1976, becoming the first woman admitted to study law at any of the Oxford men's colleges. She became the third woman president of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), and its first-ever president from Prince Edward Island. She has devoted countless hours to volunteering for community groups, including the Community Legal Information Association and the Canadian Federation of University Women, providing advice on family law, legal aid and access to justice. Hockey coach Scotty Bowman, sportscaster Brian Williams and former prime minister Paul Martin are also among 66 notables being inducted to or promoted within the Order of Canada. Former Canadian diplomat Robert Fowler, retired chief of defence staff Rick Hillier and storyteller Stuart McLean are also among those receiving honours. Canadian Lt.-Gen.
