Post-degree Programme in Computational Biology/Bioinformatics by Distance Education

The University of Kerala has recently signed an MOU with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), an internationally leading open University, for offering joint post-degree programes in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics by distance education. The MOU was exchanged in a function presided over by the IGNOU Vice-chancellor Prof V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai during 18, July 2009.

From the side of Kerala University, Centre for Bioinformatics along with Institute of Distance Education shall be the resource/co-ordinating departments. MSc Computational Biology and Bioinformatics programme is now being designed with 3 exit points. After semester 1, learners can choose to exit with a certificate in Bioinformatics; after semester 2, learners can exit with a Diploma in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and after semester 4, they can exit with MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology with specialization in either Bioinformatics or Computational Biology. The programe shall be offered by Kerala University in areas under its jurisdiction and elsewhere in India and the world, by IGNOU, using a combination of print and on-line delivery.

An expert committee has been constituted by IGNOU and Kerala University with many eminent persons to frame the curriculum. The committee met at Centre for Bioinformatics during 9th and 10th of September 2009 and preliminary design is complete. The certificate programme is expected to be announced in early 2010.
