Bear Trap Creek Volunteers Needed !

posted Oct 10, 2011 12:50 PM by CNY Chapter Izaak Walton League

BC Cobbles Volunteers:

We expect a delivery of stone cobbles at the Northern Lights Mall in Mattydale on Friday morning, October 14, and will be looking for volunteer help to place the cobbles along a 100-foot reach of Beartrap Creek next to the service drive located between (behind) the Mall and Interstate 81.

The present plans are to request volunteer help on Friday afternoon (October 14) at 1:00 PM and 5:30 PM, and again on Saturday (October 15) at 10 AM and 1:00 PM, if necessary.  Volunteers are asked to bring leather gloves and rubber boots or hip waders, although the waders may not be necessary since the cobbles will be mainly between 4-6 inches in diameter, and can be either placed or tossed into the creek.

Our objective is to provide a more diverse habitat in the stream bottom, which consists mainly of silt at present.  Beartrap Creek is classified by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation as a C(T) or trout classified stream, but has not had a viable trout population since the 1970's.

This project is sponsored by the Central New York chapter of the Izaak Walton League, under a grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency.  We plan to meet with the volunteers by the Hoffman Hothouse restaurant at the Northern Lights Mall, and can then either walk or drive back to the Creek banks where we will be placing the stone cobbles.

Any questions about this volunteer project can be directed to Les Monostory by e-mail at Fishbugm5@twcny.rr.com
