"I have always wanted to be an anthropologist, but how can you make a living doing that?"

"I want a socially responsible job, does anthropology give me practical experience and prepare me for these jobs?"

Now you have the tools to answer these questions.

The Center for Applied Anthropology at Foothill College links students in Anthropology to the professional world.

We expose students at Foothill College to opportunities for which they may apply their degrees.

Facts:

1) Anthropology-related professional fields are many, including health care, community development and planning, law enforcement (forensics), medical anthropology, NGOs, environmental consulting, public education, museums, and archaeology.

2)
Foothill students should be exposed to anthropology-related professional communities in the Bay Area via a series of targeted internships that both promote civic engagement AND provide exposure to professional anthropologists.

3) At a time when people are recognizing that the world is rapidly changing, and that we need to be ahead of these changes, anthropology is a discipline rich in perspective that is more than a little relevant. The ability to think critically, analyze current problems, and apply what you have learned to improve humanity is the main basis for Applied Anthropology.

Mission:

Use targeted internships to expose Foothill students to careers in anthropology related fields. Foothill anthropology students engage in real world professional associations and connect this experience to the completion of their certificate of proficiency. Foothill Anthropology already has four certificates: Medical Anthropology, Physical Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, and Archaeology. We will create a second level specialized certificate for Applied Anthropology.

Foothill’s Center for Applied Anthropology provides students with skill sets geared toward the use of anthropological principles for solving human problems on the local, regional and world scales. In these trying times, communities and businesses are looking to people with qualifications that merit an understanding of practical problems people are facing the world over.

Our vision for the Center for Applied Anthropology is to produce a student who can move seamlessly into various career choices where Anthropology is directly applied.

Background:

The Department of Anthropology at Foothill College offers an excellent range of courses that expose students to all facets of anthropology, including cultural anthropology, archaeology, human evolution, forensics, medical anthropology, magic and religion, lost civilizations, and modern and ancient cultures of California and the world. Our faculty prepare students for anthropology majors in 4-year institutions, take students on archaeology field schools, direct independent study projects, offer an AA degree and certificates, teach honors sections, and give students the ability to apply what they learn in the community around them. Silicon Valley is the hub of global technology change and its people are in the business of redefining traditional cultural barriers with technology. As the world increasingly becomes integrated it is important that we understand ourselves and others from an anthropological perspective. Employers look to see that applicants have developed the tools necessary to compete in the world today. The next generation of anthropology students is one who understands the new world in which we live and uses that knowledge to improve our ways of life.
