MAY 2012 News

Our Summer Reading BOOK FAIR is Next week! This is the annual Buy-one-get-one free book fair to get books into kids' hands (and teachers' classrooms, too)! The Book Fair will be in the Media center 7:45am-4:00pm every day May 14-18, 2012. Volunteers are welcomed!

Students who have overdue library books will need to replace or pay for lost books before you can shop at the May BOGO Book Fair. You can buy replacements at the book fair if you need to.

SUMMER READING

We are again partnering with the Atlanta Fulton Public Library system with their summer reading program. I will send home flyers about summer reading soon as well as information about how to get a library card for your child. Several families applied for library cards at our February 25 Literacy Festival; those should be available soon.

SIX FLAGS TICKETS

Students who have earned free tickets to Six Flags will receive them in May. Parents will also be able to purchase discount tickets online for other family members; instructions will be included in the envelope with the tickets. Six Flags tickets can only be used during the summer, mid-June through August.

We have pretty much wrapped up our AR quizzing for the year - just tallying reports and standings for awards

Here are the Class Standings showing how many words (as measured by AR quizzes passed) that each class has read so far this year:

Everyone probably had a great time over Spring Break. I don't usually "preach" about reading and movies, but I do have one concern to express for parents: PLEASE reconsider taking your young elementary student to see The Hunger Games  movie!  It's really not suitable for anyone under 12 - that's why it's rated PG-13. If your child has read and understood the books, she might be able to handle it. However, even the author says,  "Your kid shouldn’t be there if they aren’t old enough to be chosen by lottery for the annual Hunger Games (age 12)." The books are about teenagers killing each other violently. Don't we see enough of that on the news every night?
