The key players in the Dram 'n' Bass Ceilidh Band are Stephen, Ray and Ian. However, due to work pressures, family commitments, other musicial interests, we have other friends who step in as required.
A wee bit about our regulars: Stephen is the accordionist, caller and van driver. He has been playing the accordion for years and has become an expert at shouting at dancers while he gives his bellows a good squeezing. While he was a student in Edinburgh he used to be a regular participant in folk music sessions in pubs. Now he has grown up, gained 2 daughters, lost his hair and found a drummer and piano player. Ian has played the drums for years too but never really went to the pubs to play. Instead he hung around beer tents in drafty fields while he was in the pipe band. When the temperature dropped he joined the ceilidh scene, got some kit tuition from the wonderful Billy Thom, and built up a reputation as being one of the cheapest drummers in Scotland. Stephen and Ian met while playing in the Ceol Mhor Ceilidh Band and have stuck together since. Ray is the guitarist and he's new. He has the same hairstyle as Stephen which can get a bit confusing. He was taught guitar by someone called Derek Claptout who is the poor cousin of someone more famous. He also likes to deploy some patter at dancers so quite often Ray will be MC for the night. Ray likes to give us a wee song now and then too.
Band size
If you want a 2, 3 or 4 piece, that's what you'll get. But, please note that the line-up is determined by Stephen (the band leader) and we do reserve the right to change the line-up in the event of illness. So, if you've booked a four piece band you will still get a four piece band but we might need to substitue the fiddler for a second accordion at the last minute - that kind of thing. This rarely happens but we want to make you aware of this anyway...
ll above board
We have proper licenses with the PRS (Performing Rights Society) and the PPL (Phonograph Performance Limited) agency, meaning we are entitled to play music in public.
Many hotels are worried that some scruffy oaf will turn up and plug some dodgy electrics into their posh function suite. That's why many insist on bands and DJs having PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) certificates. Well, don't worry because we've got them. If your hotel needs to see them, please let us know beforehand and we'll make sure we bring them with us.
