Parents - Getting Started

This is an introduction on how to get started with Catholic Religious Emblems programs for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, American Heritage Girls and Camp Fire Girls. Detailed program enrollment, program delivery (either starting at the Scout Retreat, at-home programs, or group youth-led programs) is shown below.

Note that the usual deadline for submission on program completion paperwork (including the Boards of Review for Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII) is the last day of January.

Religious Program Application Processing (which includes the religious emblems/medals as well):
Once you have completed the program (including required signatures from Scout leaders and Parish representatives), submit your entire completed workbook to the Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting. This may be done through the following means:
  • Give the entire completed workbook to a parish representative of the Catholic Committee on Scouting. (See the list of local representatives here.)
  • Mail the entire completed workbook to this address:  Catholic Committee on Scouting, 6145 Moorfield Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80919-4802
Once the program is completed and approved, your parish will be billed a small fee for the cost of the awards/emblems.
  • Boy Scouts:
    • Guardian Angel (1st grade Cub Scouts)
    • Light of Christ (2nd and 3rd grade Cub Scouts)
    • Parvuli Dei (4th and 5th grade Grade Cub Scouts)
    • Ad Altare Dei (13 and 14 year old Boy Scouts, and who have finished the 6th grade)
    • Pope Pius XII (15 and 16 year old Boy Scouts, and who have finished the 8th grade)

  • Girl Scouts:
  • Additional religious faith development programs for Catholic Scouts: -- These are additional faith-development activities offered by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. Please note that these activities do not quality for BSA Religious Emblems and the cost for these programs (usually just a few dollars) is paid by the families - not the parishes. A check for the amount listed below must be submitted to the Committee with the application for recognition.

Beginning Programs at the Annual Scout Religious Programs Retreat

When programs are begun at the Annual Scout Retreat, blah, blah, blah....

Light of Christ

This is information for parents/guardians and Cub Scout unit leaders on organizing and conducting the Catholic Cub Scout "Light of Christ" program. The program consists of a workbook (available from Scout Shops, and some religious counselors and units) and study program generally conducted at home or in a group setting with parents within the unit. The workbook has five chapters and the duration of each chapter fits well into a session of 30-45 minutes each. Please also note that Chapter Five, Activity #2 does require a visit to your parish church on a day other than when you ordinarily attend Mass. Thus the entire program can be expected to take 4-5 hours at home plus the trip to your parish church.

A suggested at-home delivery model uses the time after Mass when the family returns home. Sit down with your Cub Scout at a table, light a candle (representing the "Light of Christ" present in your activity and which makes the time and activity special and distinct from other at-home activities) and begin each chapter. Have your family bible handy as a couple of the chapters ask the parent or guardian to read aloud a selection from Scripture. Begin or end each session with a short prayer.

When the Program is Completed:
There is an "Emblem Application Form" at the back of the workbook. First you and your scout sign the workbook indicating that the program has been completed. Next have the application signed by your den leader (or religious counselor if the program was conducted at the unit level by a trained counselor), then have the application signed by your Pastor (or a representative designated by your Pastor).  Finally, either give the application with a signed check (amount shown above) to a Catholic Committee on Scouting Representative from your parish (see the "About Us" page for a list on contacts) or mail the application to this address:  XXXXXXXXXXXX (address for Committee) XXXXXX.

You will receive acknowledgment of your application and an invitation to the Diocesan Scout recognition Mass by the mid to latter part of February.

Parvuli Dei

This is information for parents/guardians and Cub Scout unit leaders on organizing and conducting the Catholic Cub Scout "Parvuli Dei" (Children of God) program. The program consists of a workbook (available from Scout Shops, and some religious counselors and units) and study program generally conducted at home or in a group setting with parents within the unit. The workbook has five chapters and the duration of each chapter fits well into a session of 45 minutes to an hour each. Please also note that Step Five, Activity #2 does require a visit to your parish church on a day other than when you ordinarily attend Mass, and Step 3 has a week-long "assignment" (an exercise on forgiveness) to be completed over a week at home.

  • Step 1, Assignment #5 has an exercise on recognizing the "gifts" that each member of a family brings to the scout. This is a great activity to complete at the family dinner table.
  • Step 3, Assignment #2 requires a discussion with a parish volunteer. This can be accomplished before of after Mass at church with a little planning in advance. (Who does your child wish to talk with? When will they be available? etc.)
  • Step 4, Activity #2 involves involves interacting with or helping another person needing help (like a elderly person, a shut-in, or disabled). A little pre-planning is needed by the parent, guardian or religious counselor.
