Type

The annual Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) is an inter-collegiate challenge sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Institute of Steel Construction, the American Iron and Steel Institute, Bentley Systems, the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation, the National Steel Bridge Alliance, Nucor Corporation, and the Steel Structure Education Foundation. A complete set of the rules and information about the competition can be found at www.aisc.org/steelbridge

Purpose

The annual SSBC requires engineering students to design, fabricate and construct a twenty foot long steel bridge themselves based on new specifications given every year. The objective is to supplement the education of civil engineering students with a comprehensive, student-driven project experience from conception and design through fabrication, erection and testing, culminating in a steel structure that meets client specifications and optimizes performance and economy.

Benefits

The SSBC increases awareness of real-world issues such as spatial constraints, material properties, strength, serviceability, fabrication and erection processes, safety, esthetics and cost. Success in inter-collegiate competition requires effective team work and project management. Future engineers are stimulated to innovate, practice professionalism and use structural steel efficiently.

Publicity

This highly popular competition is now the premier event for Civil Engineering students in the USA. In addition to being publicized by ASCE, the regional event will also be publicized by and held at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU on April 23-25th, 2010. 2010 National Student Steel Bridge Competition will be held on May 28-29 at Purdue University, which will assist the ASCE in publicizing the national competitions.
