Club History

The involvement of CCNY in the Annual Student Steel Bridge Competition began in the early nineties, but due to financial difficulties the club was never able to compete in the regional and national competitions. In many cases The City College of New York Steel Bridge Club produced a design but never received the funding necessary to construct the bridge itself. The hopes of competing regionally and nationally were renewed in the spring of 2001 when an alumnus funded the design and construction of the bridge as well as sponsored the club’s entry into the competition. Since then, the club has entered bridges into the competition each year (except 2006). We have been doing progressively better. In 2007, we took third place, almost making it to the regional competition, winning prizes for the stiffness of our bridge. In 2008, we took second place in regionals making it to the national competition for the first time in CCNY history. Creating that bridge has given us great confidence and innovation and has brought additional prestige and honor for the City College of New York.

This year, the CCNY Steel Bridge Club is striving to make it all the way to the national competition again. Many of last years members have graduated but they remain dedicated to the club in an advisory capacity. We have also recruited new members who have taken active roles in the club this year.
