Guidance Policies - Credit Counselling Policy

Credit Counselling Policy

  1. A student must select one Religion Course each year of high school for four years.  Sequencing of Religion Courses is not allowed.
  2. A student will be allowed to select one study period only when they have achieved 24 credits by September 1st of the school year in question.
  3. A grade 12student will only be allowed to select one study period for the entire school year.
  4. A student who is returning for a fifth year will be allowed one study period per semester if they have achieved 28 credits or more by September of that school year.
  5. Students seeking part-time status (which means scheduling less than three credits) must seek the Principals’ permission through the Head of Guidance.
  6. Students who fail a course first semester will not be permitted to retake that course the following semester.
  7. Students who fail a compulsory course in semester one and plan to upgrade it in summer school must select that course on their option sheet in February.  It will be changed after successful completion of summer school in August.
  8. All students will be counselled to graduate with at least 31 credits.
  9. Students who have completed 30 credits and can graduate but wish to return for a fifth year must meet with the Vice-Principal to seek permission.  Those students who receive permission to return for upgrading must exhibit consistent attendance and diligent work habits in the form of task completion.  Those students who do not in the opinion of their teachers, guidance counsellor and the school administration will by the mid-term report be interviewed for the purpose of exit counselling.
  10. Students who are taking Essential level courses and wish to change to the applied stream require collaborative agreement between the Head of Special Education, the guidance counsellor, the Teacher and their parents.
  11. In order to be successful in academic/university preparation courses it is suggested that students maintain a minimum level three (70%) in order to remain at the academic level.
  12. Remember when selecting courses for the option sheet destination consideration is important.  Post secondary schools require very specific course completion for admittance.  When in doubt seek assistance from your Guidance counsellor.
  13. If a student is failing a grade 11 or 12 course at mid-term they may drop the course with full disclosure (the mark will not appear on a student transcript).  It is the responsibility of the student to see their Guidance counsellor immediately at mid-term for the required consent form and it must be completed and submitted within five days of the mid-term report card going home.  There is no exception to the five day rule as it is a Ministry regulation.
