Frequent Questions

On what day will I compete?

posted ‎‎Jan 30, 2009 5:31 AM‎‎ by Timothy Hannan   [ updated ‎‎Feb 14, 2009 5:09 AM‎‎ ]

I understand that the competition schedule for the Fleadh will not be posted until 1 week prior to the Fleadh.  Would it be possible for you to tell me on which day the solo competitions will be held?

We expect to have the Fleadh Syllabus finalized and posted on the website by the end of February.  The Syllabus will explain which day your competition will be held.  As a rule, all solo competitions take place on Saturday and the duet, trio, group and ceili band competitions are take place on Sunday.

How to Compete at the Fleadh for the First Time

posted ‎‎Jan 20, 2009 7:44 AM‎‎ by Timothy Hannan   [ updated ‎‎Jan 30, 2009 5:41 AM‎‎ ]

I would like to compete at the Fleadh for the first time this year...how do
I go about it?

If you are working with a teacher, we recommend you discuss this with your
teacher, who will help you prepare for the competitions.  If you do not have
a teacher who can guide you, we recommend you visit our teachers page to
find someone familiar with both Irish traditional music, and the fleadh
process.  If that is not possible, you should consider coming to the fleadh
this year just to listen, observe the process, and meet other musicians and
their teachers to get a better sense of what is involved.  Listen to several
competitions and see if you can hear what the judges hear when picking the
winners.  It can be a lot of fun just to listen, and you will find yourself
inspired and better able to prepare for next year.

That said, by the end of March we will have a registration form posted on
the website at www.nyfleadh.com that you can print, fill out and mail in to
register.  Registration can also be done on the day of the fleadh, on a walk
in basis, but this carries a small additional "late entry" fee.  Advance
registration is appreciated as it allows us to plan for an adequate number
of judges and support staff.  The schedule will be posted on the website
about a week in advance.  We recommend you arrive at the fleadh at least one
hour before your scheduled competition, and check the schedule posted in
multiple locations throughout the building, to see if there have been any
last minute changes in competition time or room assignment.
