I would like to compete at the Fleadh for the first time this year...how do I go about it?
If you are working with a teacher, we recommend you discuss this with your teacher, who will help you prepare for the competitions. If you do not have a teacher who can guide you, we recommend you visit our teachers page to find someone familiar with both Irish traditional music, and the fleadh process. If that is not possible, you should consider coming to the fleadh this year just to listen, observe the process, and meet other musicians and their teachers to get a better sense of what is involved. Listen to several competitions and see if you can hear what the judges hear when picking the winners. It can be a lot of fun just to listen, and you will find yourself inspired and better able to prepare for next year.
That said, by the end of March we will have a registration form posted on the website at www.nyfleadh.com that you can print, fill out and mail in to register. Registration can also be done on the day of the fleadh, on a walk in basis, but this carries a small additional "late entry" fee. Advance registration is appreciated as it allows us to plan for an adequate number of judges and support staff. The schedule will be posted on the website about a week in advance. We recommend you arrive at the fleadh at least one hour before your scheduled competition, and check the schedule posted in multiple locations throughout the building, to see if there have been any last minute changes in competition time or room assignment.
