About CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation)
CBR is a multi-sectoral strategy for rehabilitation, equalization of opportunities, poverty reduction and social inclusion for persons with disabilities and their families.

CBR has evolved a lot since its inception about three decades ago. In 2004, World Health Organization (WHO), International Labour Organisation (ILO) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published the Joint Position Paper on CBR.

In India, during the last two decades, various State Governments and NGOs have adopted CBR as one of their key strategy in reaching out and working with persons with disabilities especially in rural areas and in poor communities.

Genesis of CBR India Network:

The 1st Asia Pacific CBR Congress was held at Bangkok from 18th – 20th Feb 2009. This congress was organized by the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

One of the outcomes of the congress is the overwhelming support by the delegates to form a country specific CBR Network that will in turn be part of CBR Asia Pacific Network and CBR Global Network/ International Alliance.

As part of this process, during this congress, the delegates from India met separately and unanimously agreed to form a CBR India Network that will be part of CBR Asia Pacific Network and CBR Global Network/ International Alliance.
