The discovery of textures, and how to combine them. The form I think a material will take, until it takes an altogether different form (usually better than expected). The strange - or quite ordinary - object I stumble across, pick up, ponder, and forget about...then rediscover. That material I collect in abundance but have no idea how to use, until... It is crucial for me to use materials that might normally be discarded. Preventing the inflation of landfills, even in my small way, brings levity to my conscience. Objects that are considered plain and therefore overlooked are of great value to me as a creative challenge. There is a visceral thrill in transforming a paper towel roll or grocery bag into something wild and alive. In my work I am always looking for the meeting point of the organic and the minimal; capturing gestures in the abstract. There is a beautiful tension in the pairing of the fluid and the geometric that I am drawn to exploring. My work could be called figurative in that I am so inspired by the movement of the body, though the representation is not literal. I strive for the distillation of a human movement or emotion to its core. I prefer to work in a rather limited color range for each piece, if not monochromatic, in order to really let the form and texture speak.
About the Artist I came to art as a child, and my career has evolved from sandcastle engineer to landscape designer to book artist to graphic designer to curator and artist. My free time is increasingly spent in my studio making collage and sculpture with the abundance of orphaned objects that I have adopted. I received my BA in Environmental Design from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In recent years I have had the true pleasure of curating highly successful solo and group exhibits. I also teach found object art classes at various community art centers and serve as a guest critic at art studio classes.
