On November 10th, Jonathon Seagull was seen in several locations in the cove waddling down the street with a drooping wing. Animal whisperer, Louis, eventually managed to capture him and get him to the BI Vet Clinic, where Dr. Westcott confirmed that the wing was broken.
We would have taken him to a Wildlife Rescue Group on the mainland, except that they would most certainly have had him euthanized. Instead, Alastair repaired the wing and Louis took him home to recuperate. After taking him back and forth many times to the clinic for check-ups, and giving the bird's wing gentle daily massages, Jonathon seemed to be much improved so Louis tried a test flight with him. However, on his best try he didn't seem to be able to get any higher than 6 feet and it was assumed that he would never be able to soar like the wind again. So we started looking at possible sites to erect a special enclosure for the bird - with Louis promising to take care of him for as long as needed.
Then, a few days ago - approximately two months after the accident - Louis took Jonathon to the ball park to give him another chance at catching the wind...and...he did it! He jumped and he jumped, and he flapped his wings, and finally managed to get enough lift to take flight. Jonathon Seagull is free again! Thank you so much Alastair and Louis for not giving up on him. |
