New Advent- Catholic Encyclopedia, Summa Theologica, Bible, Other- Catholic Site

This is one of the largest Catholic sites online, and much of it's uploaded content contains the mark of approval of Rome, as free of doctrinal and moral error i.e. the Nihil Obstat (Nothing hinders- Censor); Imprimatur (Bishop's/equivalent approval of work as free from doctrinal and moral error).

 The Catholic Encyclopedia

The Catholic Encyclopedia is from the beginning of the 20th century, and predates Vatican II. It contains a good compendium of Catholic information at the period it was written, but also excluded developments after Vatican II.

Other online versions of the encyclopedia include:
- http://catholiclibrary.com/ (we are unsure of this version, as we know it indirectly from the stblogs.net home page.)

The Summa Theologica, by St.Thomas Aquinas

let according to site here denote -http://www.newadvent.org/summa

This is a very famous work by Saint Aquinas, as translated into English and revised in 1920 (according to the site), by the "Fathers of the English Dominican Province".

According to the site it contains
"PRIMA PARS.
Sacred Doctrine. The One God. The Blessed Trinity. Creation. The Angels. The Six Days. Man. The Government of Creatures.

PRIMA SECUNDÆ PARTIS.
Man's Last End. Human Acts. Passions. Habits. Vice and Sin. Law. Grace.

SECUNDA SECUNDÆ PARTIS.
Faith. Hope. Charity. Prudence. Justice. Fortitude. Temperance. Acts Which Pertain to Certain Men.

TERTIA PARS.
The Incarnation. The Life of Christ. Sacraments. Baptism. Confirmation. The Holy Eucharist. Penance.

SUPPLEMENTUM TERTIÆ PARTIS.
Penance (continued). Extreme Unction. Holy Orders. Matrimony. The Resurrection. Appendices.  " (according to site)

Saint Aquinas is often quoted by Anglican C.S. Lewis, and read by a vast gathering of Christians, and other groups, and is further a very Orthodox Catholic, as he relates to his time.

New advent has a very good source of his Summa Theologica.

Bible

let according to site here denote -http://www.newadvent.org/bible

The Douay Rheims version of the bible is used by the site, as revised in A.D. 1749 (according to site), this has the Imprimatur from the church in 1899, and is arguably one of the best bibles ever published.

Other

The New Advent site also contains many Catholic documents, and links to other sites, and an article on praying the rosary.

fathers

the site has a comprehensive list and archive of early Christian documents, some Catholic, some from other sects at the time. This is a must read.

Our Verdict on the site

This is a very useful resource online, and was one of the early Catholic sites.

Faults

It should be used with caution as to language- in old English worship refers to honour, and there are other similar quirks, which can be misunderstood. (so far as many documents are 18th to 21 century translations).

It is also largely pre-Vatican II, and may have some incorrect emphasis, or statements which are specific to that time.

Not all documents are in our experience- adequately labelled (as to their relation to sound doctrine), and the Apocrypha are also on this site, meaning that one could read the Gospel of Thomas, or others while reading, or using google to search this site. This is under the "Father's" section. This includes non-catholic works, but is largely Catholic.

Strengths

It is like an online library, and itself is often only a gatherer of other's brilliant, orthodox, or noteworthy content.

This is the fourth busiest Catholic site online (according to New Advent's Home page), and has great impact. Further, it is self sustaining, via adverts, and is open to co-operation, and being a platform for the Faith and others who aid it.

This Page is an attempt at Co-operation (a civic virtue), on the internet by Scripturelink.
