Catholic online- news hub

The Catholic Online company is probably best known for their accurate, up to date news coverage.

Catholic online, a wide perspective

Let Catholic Online, 2008 denote Catholic Online, 2008, accessed June http://www.catholic.org/about/
see about page online- http://www.catholic.org/about/

Our Rating of Catholic Online has changed to caution- we do not advise the use of their news, or reading their views- since the previous US election. We strongly advise avoidance of this site!

While some may still struggle with more unusual or less looked at issues, and others, such as us may accuse Catholic online of being dangerously too liberal, it is one of the largest online catholic sites, currently listed as the 6th most busy Catholic resource online (april 17 2008, K knight, www.newadevent.org accessed June 12 2008), and reaches Catholics in over 120 countries (Catholic Online, 2008, accessed June http://www.catholic.org/about/). Of itself it says

Justifying it's own existence, Catholic online has an extensive online presence

Catholic online notes:
That announcement involving use of the internet strategically, could create more support for sites with Catholic audiences(Catholic Online, 2008)

It is successful as such a source, stating the following of their product:

7,000 saints(Catholic Online, 2008) are listed under www.catholic.org/saints

They receive over 100 000 Catholic visitors per day from up to 1 000 000 page hits a day (Catholic Online, 2008)

They claim they supply free email(Catholic Online, 2008) this at webmail.catholic.org , which was unreachable at the time of our viewing.

Sections of the site

The site has many sections including a copy of the 1911 pre-Vatican II Catholic Encyclopedia, a version of the New Jerusalem Bible, and many additional resources. these include their news hub, saints- information and prayers, prayers- to saints and spiritual figures, Catholic information such as info on becoming catholic or on papacy , maps of us churches ,etc, bible, encyclopedia, forums .

Links to these are provided for use on each of these.

Encyclopedia

http://www.catholic.org/encyclopedia

It has a good source of this famous 16 volume encyclopedia, which is declared free of doctrinal and moral error, by bishops of the church, as relates to pre-Vatican II doctrine.

Bible

The New Jerusalem bible, listed on this site, is a copy of one of the most popular Catholic (73 book) bibles available.

News hub

News on this site is generally of note, and covers allot of the news, but this site has a dangerous bias in what and how they cover news.

Saints

It has over 7 000 saint in their database, and many prayers to or by these saints.

Prayer

It has a wonderful database of rituals, prayers, and information, easily matched by other sites such as www.ewtn.com .

Clife- "Catholic Life"

http://www.catholic.org/clife Site has information as relates to the faith, highly partisan, dangerously dissident to the papacy's views.

Us Church locations (Maps)

Locate a local US church via this resource. see also http://www.masstimes.org/dotnet/Default.aspx; which does the same job! We have not rated the second site!

Arts and entertainment

http://www.catholic.org/ae/

reviews of arts, and entertainment. Emphasis on their version of a catholic perspective.
For specialists on film reviews, see http://decentfilms.com/ or for a watch on Catholic perspective, see http://www.catholicleague.org/.
The Us bishops also have a film reviewer, as with most Catholic sources. (other sources thanks to http://scripturelink.googlepages.com/directoryofcatholicsites - viewable in many languages).

Forums

These are some very large forums. Expect a more liberal audience, of readers and posters in these forums, than in some other forums.

Our verdict on the site

While we did once only see this site as slightly liberal, it is now seen as an extremely liberal site, with much growth if it expects any to see fidelity to the papacy. We take back our statement that it is useful in reporting news, this site is a danger site, we advise complete avoidance of it, with the possible exception of its bible, encyclopedia, and perhaps some other resources we may have linked to in the scripture link search engine, while cutting off the rest of the site! Much thanks to Catholic Culture for also rating them as such, allowing us more freedom in this, when we discovered serious faults!

The New Jerusalem Bible, and Catholic encyclopedia on the site are must reads, and well laid out.

The information on this site s generally of use, but because of its vast size, it is impossible for us to vet the entirety of this ever growing site.

Faults

Problems loading

It often has problems loading, in our experience, meaning that it may be often better to search this site in Google, and from there to use their cache of article.

Liberalism may be more than just a danger to the Catholic's aeviternal salvation a danger- be utterly cautious here:

Slightly liberal past, in our experience. This is seemed at a time to be for appealing to a diverse audience, but did not appear at one stage taint their articles. Unfortunately, their stance on abortion in the previous US election could have contributed to mass excommunications of Catholics- and the election of an utterly not desired party to the White house. We have changed our rating of this site to dangerous. We have also seen one or two questionable articles as relates to evangelism, notably quoted is the following:

A published article in which the writer seems to disagree with evangelism by Catholics, as though it were the cause of a wrong, and not the ultimate good. It insults the works of the early evangelists, and suggests abating traditional approaches, in what seems quite a liberal stance. In fact, it calls naming one's own religion superior along the lines of an "egotistic" opinion, and names evangelizing the poor- "taking advantage" of the downtrodden, and a moral wrong. Instead of viewing the downtrodden as rich in faith, and therefore at advantage in heaven, and a must evangelize, it condemns this action.

(Evangelism in the modern world, Dr. Chris Anthony,Butterworth, Malaysia, http://www.catholic.org/featured/headline.php?ID=3799,11/25/2006) we were unable to access it outside of Google's cache.

Strengths

This site is gigantic, and very useful. It is a powerful contender on the internet in the Catholic market. This said, we prefer some other sites as relates their information, notably EWTN- www.ewtn.com,Catholic answers- www.catholic.com, and the www.catholicnews.com Catholic News Service site. For news we prefer www.fides.org or our own http://southafricancatholic.blogspot.com ; or these services:
