Delicious I created a new account and tagged the home page of this website to it. Now, when people search my name or related information, this home page will show up in the tag cloud. Flickr I added a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge. Then, I added tags such as San Francisco, Bridge, and California. I created a new account onto FriendFeed. I subscribed to Professor Wolber's page as well as other students in the class. I found an entry for my high school in Orange, California. I added some more information that was subtle, yet accurate. Collaborative Systems Collaborative systems is specifically designed to assist people in a quick and easy way through a common system. Online programs such as Delicious, Flickr, and FriendFeed are all examples of collaborative systems that are commonly used. Delicious is useful even for individuals because people are able to use bookmarking, which allows for a convenient way for people to use the Internet. Delicious is now fun by Yahoo, which is was a huge gain for the previous owner, Joshua Schachter. The main reason this collaborative system is so useful is its convenience in bookmarking. If I were doing a school project, Delicious would help because I would be able to bookmark important sites or tag important information that I would want other people in my group to see. By using FriendFeed, I would be able to see what every one in my group was doing through collaborative systems such as Delicious and Facebook. Also, these sites that information is linked to always have information that is mostly up to date. These systems create convenience for everyone in the group, including yourself. Delicious search is different than a Google search in that they have different ranking systems. Since Delicious is a folksonomy, the ranking is followed by ordinary people who rank the pages, rather than experts, like those who work for Google. Folksonomy is the idea of social taggings on the Internet. In 2004, folksonomy became extremely popular from Web 2.0, which allowed for tagging to become possible. It is made up by ordinary people that allows for quick and flexible changes. There are a flat list of categories that are input by the average Joe. A tag is a a specified keyword that is attached to some sort of information. A tag is useful when someone is trying to search for that keyword. When they type in that keyword in collaborative systems such as Delicious, people are able to find information that has been tagged previously by another user. A tag cloud is shows a visual representation of all the tags that have been associated with the item that is being tagged. Often times, the tags are listed from descending order either by size or alphabetical. The most popular tag available on Flickr is the keyword "animals." After searching 'folksonomy' on Flickr, this is what came up: Geotagging means to add an identification that relates to geography towards types of media. The purpose of geotagging is to help users find specific information about something attached to the media, whether it be a picture or video. Geotagging is used with Flickr--- FriendFeed is another collaborative system that is useful for users because it is a large social connection that all friends and family are able to share their information or feeds. Information that can be shared are blogs or pictures. In the past, there have been several questions and concerns regarding the accuracy of Wikipedia, but not programs such as Britannica. Based on the article, there was a scientific study done that there was on average 4 errors in the Wikipedia entires and on average 3 errors in Britannica, which is obviously a slight difference. An advantage of Wikipedia is that it is quickly growing, even in hundreds of other languages besides English. Wikipedia is also updated much more often than encyclopedias such as Britannica, which is only updated every few years. Even though people think that unreliable people are updating information on Wikipedia, there are people who are constantly checking their own sites to make sure that entries in Wikipedia are accurate. |
