CasualWebFiler

CasualWebFiler is a very simple webpage file collection/management program.  I wrote this for my personal use, so unless I get a lot of feedback, I won't spend much time to develop this program.  I might add new features as I need them in my use.  The program is so simple that you can probably figure it out.  I'll put a simple instruction here.  I might add more content if people ever use this (and give me feedback).

System Requirement: Any Mac with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.5 or later

Download: CasualWebFiler 0.3

How to use

Browser

  1. When you start CasualWebFiler, you will see a small window with two buttons.  You can either start a new database file or open an existing file.

  2. You can also do the same from the menu or shortcut.

  3. CasualWebFiler imports your current Safari Bookmarks.

  4. Surf the web and if you want to save the page, you have the following options.

With these four buttons, you can add the page as a file to the database.  You can edit the page and the change you make will be reflected when you add the page to the database except for WebArchive files.
    • Add Webarchive - WebKit (Safari) Web Archive file
    • Add HTML - HTML file
    • Add RTF - Righ Text Format file
    • Add Text - Plain Text file

With these three buttons, you can extract the info in the text box (right).  Edit the content and then click Add to Database to add the edited text as a file.  The file format will be based on which button you used to extract the text.
    • Get HTML - saved as HTML
    • Get Attributed Text - saved as RTF
    • Get Plain Text - saved as Plain Text

Database

  1. You can search the files based on your query.  You can search by ALL, Titie, File Type, and URL.

  2. You can change the titles on the table in case you want to make them comprehensible.

  3. To delete entries from the database, select the ones you want to delete on the table and click Remove.  You will be asked if you also want to delete the associated files.

  4. You can create groups to manage files.  Click Add Group to create a new group.  To remove a group, click Remove Group.  Removing a group does not delete files.  Simply the group assignment will be removed from files.

  5. Selecting a group on the group view shows files in the group.  To view all the files in the database, click Show All.  If you click a group view anywhere other than groups, files not assigned to any group will be listed.

  6. To assign files to a group, you can drag and drop files to a group.  Or you can manually change the group assignment one by one.

  7. You can check and edit the content by selecting an entry and click Preview.  A panel will appear with the content of the file.  Unfortunately, you cannot edit WebArchive files.  If you select multiple entries, only the first one will appear.  Click Save Changes to same any changes you make to the file.

  8. You can export selected files to a folder.  Go to Menu -> Database -> Export Selected Files.

  9. If you somehow have entries with missing files or files without an entry, you can clean up the database.  Go to Menu -> Database.

    • Clean up Database - delete entries without a file
    • Delete Unassociated Files - delete files without an entry

Note

  • HTML and Plain Text files will be saved as UTF-8 text file.
  • CasualWebFiler files are packages with a database file and downloaded files.  If you want direct access to saved web files, right-click (control + click) the .cwf file and select Show Package Content.  You can see the files in folders sorted by date you saved them.  But unless you want to grab files that do not have database entry, you might want to use Export function.
