Database Mode - Advanced

In Advanced Corpora Handling Database Mode, you can create database file(s) from your selection of files just as in Simple Database Mode.  In addition, you can manage database files on CasualConc and select more than one database file for your analysis.

To switch to Advanced Corpora Handling Mode, go to Preferences -> General -> Corpora Handling and select Advanced.

Close the Preferences window and you will see the File view changed.  You might want to restart CasualConc to fix table layout.

Creating a new database file

Once in Advanced mode, select files/folders to include in a new database, just as you selected files/folders for your analysis in File mode by clicking Add File(s) button.

You will be prompted to select file(s)/folder(s) to add to the list (upper right table).  You can add the files with the specified file type(s) in the Preferences.

The selected files will be added to the table.  You can change encodings of plain text files on the table.

If you want to add more files, repeat the same process. (You can add files by drag&drop the files on to this table)

Now, you can create a new database file with the selected files.  Click Create New button.

You will be prompted to select a folder to save the database file.

This process might take some time depending on how big your corpus is.

Once the database file is created, you will see the following message.

The new database file will show up on the upper left table.

Check the box next to the file you want to use for your analysis and start analyzing the data!

You can select more than one database file for your analysis.  Just check the database files you want to use for your analysis.

There are a few more things you can do in this mode.

Checking files in a database file

You can check the files in a database file.  First, check the box Check Content.

Then, simply select (clicking) a database file on the table.

Deleting a database file from the list

You can delete a database file from the list by clicking Delete button.

You will see the following warning message.  Click Yes to delete the selected database file from the list.  This will not delete the database file from your hard drive.

Adding files to a database file

You can add files to an existing database file.  First, select files/folders just like you first selected files to create a new database file by clicking Add File(s) button.

Then select a database file to which you want to add the selected files by clicking the database file name (it doesn't have to be checked).

Finally, click Add Files from Add List button at the left bottom corner of the window to add selected files to the selected database file.

Deleting file(s) from a database file

You can delete files from a selected database file.  Simply select file(s) on the lower left table and click Delete File(s) from Selected Corpus/Database button.

You will see a warning message.  If you are sure you want to delete the selected file(s), click Yes.

Adding an existing database file to the list

You can add existing database files to the list by clicking Add Existing File to List button.

You will be prompted to select an existing database file.  Select it and click Open.

The selected file will be added to the list.

Previewing file content

If you select a file on the upper right table or the lower left table, you can see the content of the selected file.  The content of a selected file will appear in the lower right text box.
