Hi,
I have created this site to allow the friends of Karen Bayne to take part in her recovery. Karen was in a serious bicycle accident on Oct. 24, 2009 while riding in the Hilly Hundred in Bloomington. Initially she was in a coma and has since regained consciousness. Her injuries include two subdural hematomas and probably concussion, fractured orbital socket bone, two cracked ribs, a partially collapsed lung, a couple of cracked vertebrae, a cracked kneecap, and various lacerations. Karen has insurance, but she still will be facing some major expenses with co-pays, rehabilitation, current living expenses etc. I am sure there are many of you who would like to help as do my family and I.
My name is Michael Glasgow, I have been friend's with Karen since 2001, we met when we worked together at Bicycle Garage in Bloomington and have continued to be friends every since. Feel free to email Rochelle or Melinda, Karen's sisters to check me out as I don't know many of you in the bicycle club. Dave Tanner would also be a good reference for me.
The donation button on this site goes directly to Karen's Paypal account of which only she will have access. You will be able to donate with most major credit cards, Paypal funds or possibly your checking account if you have a Paypal account. I am also exploring other donation avenues, but this is a really simple and easy way to donate.
The good news is Karen is doing much better, a blog to follow her progress is set up at http://ktroupe.blogspot.com/. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, I figure with a little help from each of us, we can help take some the sting out of this unfortunate accident. Feel free to email me at smglasbiker@hotmail.com or call me at 812-606-5249 with suggestions or other donation possibilities. Thank you all for your support of Karen in this difficult time. Please note a couple people have emailed that they were getting an error message when they clicked the donation button below, I contacted Paypal and they said her account is fine, so the problem must lie in the browser/computer or just browser you are using. If you have any trouble please email me. You can also use the "send money" tab directly from your Paypal to kbayne@indiana.edu.
Sincerely,
Michael Glasgow
PS: Some have expressed interest in donating to help restore Karen's bike as we all know how important it is to her. I think this is a wonderful idea as well. Before Karen's recent setback I asked her if she was mad at her bike jokingly, she answered, "no", I asked her if she was worried about anything and she said, "I worry about losing fitness", I said, "so you plan on getting back on your bike as soon as you can", and she said, "yes". I have her bike here and have checked it over. Her bike is going to need a new frame, as the rear seat stay is cracked, new fork and wheelset. I am also going to put new handlebars on it due to the nature of the crash. I am confident we will be able to get her a new frame/ components, or a new bike at a substantially discounted rate. It is my personal business to find high end bikes for people, so I will make sure your bike donation dollars stretch as far as they possibly can. If you want to help with the bike send me an email and we'll discuss options for that as well.
