The Cartwheels press is founded in 2008 and is an Exeter based small press, which grew out of the larger Cartwheels Artists Collective (http://www.cartwheels-collective.co.uk/Home.html) . It currently specializes in three strands of publication: The first strand of the press produces political pamphlets, all of which are written in the best seventeenth Ranter century tradition. These pamphlets include the Books of… series of political poetry, and the Rant series of essay. The former take the form of a serial poem, which takes the reader of an invigorating journey, which includes many different voices, and many types of politics. All of these threads being made to resonate across one another; history, patriotism and sheep need never be the same again! The series currently includes the books of… Contentions, Indictments and Offences. The poet (S.V.W) also issues monthly, new indictments on whatever has annoyed her in the news, on the Cartwheels Website. The latter take the form of Rants which always start with a single philosopher or event and show how that thinker or that event still over hangs our world and still matters to how we have to understand it. Philosophical interpretations blends with very modern critique, in alchemy designed to make the world never seem so simple again.
The second strand of Cartwheels press produces abstract performance poetry pamphlets, based upon geometry, and philosophy. Modern thought has never been so whimsical and notoriously difficult ideas so accessible and vivid – so surprise yourself by understanding and even enjoying them!
The final strand produces The Porlock the Warlock books. These are full length novels and are written for ages 12 and up. They centre adventures of the advanced scientist Porlock and his troublesome wards Rag and Vag. Their first adventure, Porlock the Warlock and the Indigo Swan, takes them off to Pluto and back to bronze age Iraq and Viking Crediton, Exeter and York, all in the quest mythical Indigo swans feather. Their adventures includes being actually fed to lion , a magic duel (where all the magic is science), and a Viking kidnap. In the process they also and quite unintentionally are responsible for the discovery of burning glass and the three famous marks on the Exeter book. The story blends whimsy with the true mythic; local history with truly global concerns; and the elements of the traditional ‘children’s story’ , with deep and complex real world issues,. The Author S.V.W. brings all the passion of the true performing story teller, and her love history , Devon and the world, to produce an addictive and quite unforgettable tale for really all ages.
