CHS zombie walk Friday 13th As part of a burgeoning international tradition, a group of CHS students dressed and made up as zombies, walked thru the high school building on Friday the 13th.National Art Honor Society and Painting and Drawing students alike learned Hollywood special effect makeup techniques to create bites, wounds, and bruises. The walk was also in conjunction with CHS's Unity Week, as a tongue and cheek reference to how we are really all the same underneath our traditionally made up exterior, as well as how we all have "spirit"! Zombie Walks on Friday the 13th took place as far away as SAO PAULO, BRAZIL; Toronto, Ontario; and Tokyo; and as close as Grand Rapids, Michigan; Phoenix, Arizona; and Buffalo, NY. Zoe Power, a sophomore at CHS, advanced art student, and NAHS member said, "We are so happy to be able to learn about types of art that are not traditional art. A zombie walk is called a "happening" which began somewhere in the 1960's with artists doing things like throwing hotdogs out of helicopters over an outdoor art event. A zombie walk is accessible to all people. Plus we get to learn about cool makeup techniques. I am interested now in stuff like this to learn in college- like SCAD." Dakota Pahel-Short, co-president of the NAHS, stated, "Not only that, but things like this make school fun without distracting from the academic side of things. Like last year when the seniors rode wheeled vehicles thru the halls. Everyone was smiling. You don't see that every day in school." Profit from the event (where students could elect to have themselves "zombie-fied") are going to the Orange Country Animal Society in the form of toys for the animals housed there. Victoria Sylvestre, the visual art teacher, commented, "CHS has such a great, open minded bunch of students. It is fantastic as an artist and teacher to be able to work with them in a non-traditional manner. Our level of enthusiasm and excitement is over the top when it comes to planning these "happenings"." Asked what they have planned for the next event, Mrs. Sylvestre smiled and said, "it's a secret! But you can be sure it'll be fun." Laughing, she added, "Oh, and also fit within the NC standards for art education." |
