Brief resumé

When I begun to be interested developing multimedia applications, in 1983, this field was in Portugal a distant mirage and the paths to reach the oasis were almost unknown. Still, I already made some experiments, presented in a conference called Video Books, hold at the IV Conference on Youth Books, at Gulbenkian Foundation. I designed with the aid of a Spectrum computer 48 K an example of an interactive book for children, which I presented at that meeting. The research process went on, and on and on and, finnaly,  in December 2008, I decided to publish the Digital Library. There I've designed the main structure either inside the library, either in the book's structure. As a writer, I have there some stories for children and one for adults: The Rise of the Digital Words.
Back in to the past: in 1987 Philips had initiated the procedures to research and commercialise later a new compact disc - CD-I - patent that was developed together with Sony. It was in 1989 that an invitation to do an apprentice-ship in Dorking, England, and later in Eindhoven, Holland, in order to deepen my knowledge in the multimedia and the research skills in the new CD-I platform.
In March 1991 a consortium was funded in Portugal to research and develop multimedia applications. This one was named Investigation centre for the Interactive Technologies- C.I.T.I. This one in its first stage of existence involved Philips Portugal, New University of Lisbon, The Open University and the National centre of Geographic Information- CNIG. In the addressed invitation to direct the Investigation centre several were the factors that should considered: the sistematic use of computing as a work tool, the teaching of Media Technology at the university, the creative writing and the authorship of TV programs, this were arguments/factors that weighted in the choice.
The team that was at that time part of the C.I.T.I. answered to the Philips challenge and in 1993 the Investigation Centre was a multimedia pioneer in Portugal when it realised "Lisboa" in the "Pictures of Cities" collection.
Between 1993 and 1995 five new CD-I applications were made- one of them internationally awarded- new lines of investigation were developed, specially in the interactive area, CD-ROM and on-line multimedia.
The decision to the take the P.H.D. on Audiovisuals and Multimedia in the New University of Lisbon was only assumed after testing with satisfaction the capacities to develop work in the binomial I&D. Since then, studying new processes and realising applications are actions that are part of the Investigation Centre daily experience with my students. There we try to develop and apply methodological instruments of search, to be able to formulate hypothesis, to experiment processes, to head projects and people that respect the rules of the group's dynamic, these are necessary and adequate conditions of the work that was developed in a university environment.
