Meet the J6 Team

W3FF Budd Drummond is one of the principals in Buddipole. His main interest lies in making portable, "bicycle mobile", "golf cart mobile", and "walking" HF contacts from whatever location he finds himself in. Budd was one of the members of the 2007 Buddipole Montseratt DXpedition and the 2009 St. Martin Buddipole adventure at FS and PJ7. His web page is http://www.qsl.net/W3FF. In September 2004 Budd worked every continent using 100 watts on his "bicycle mobile" in one two hour ride, and has logged more than 5,000 QSOs as a  "walking mobile" station.  Budd participated on the 2010 J6/St Lucia and the 2011 "suitcase dxpedition" to J7/Dominca.  His St Lucia call is J68FF.

David Drake was born in French Lick, IN.  He grew up on a small farm and later attended Purdue University and graduated with a BS in Construction Engineering.  Dave was initially employed as a Highway Engineer with the Indiana DOT.  Later, he worked in various engineering and management positions with Old Ben Coal Company.  After Old Ben was acquired by Zeigler Coal Holding Co, Dave served as president of various operating subsidiaries.  After a successful IPO in 1992 Dave left Zeigler to start his own business.  Dave currently holds a securities license and is self employed in the financial services industry.

Dave obtained his Amateur license in 1977 and has operated various modes including RTTY, AM and SSB phone.  David was a member of the Indiana National Guard as a communications specialist.  His last assignment was RTTY Team Chief.

Dave has operated from the Bahamas in 2010 as WD9CMD/C6A.  His St Lucia call is J6/WD9CMD.
Joe Kelly was born in Chicago.  He grew up in Chicago then on to southern California where he lived until 2003 when he moved to Portland, OR.  He attended college at Cal State, Los Angeles, and Cal State Long Beach then UCLA and finally California Institute of Technology.  He has degrees in Science, Engineering, and Management.  He has worked at JPL Pasadena, the R&D Department of Southern California Edison, owned and operated Paragon Consulting Services, and currently works for PECI as a Director of Technical Services.

Joe obtained his first Amateur license in 2009 and has advanced to Extra Class in 2010.  His main interests are DXpeditioning, field antenna applications and tests, radio contesting, and QRP operations.

This will be Joe's first Caribbean DXpedition.  He has previous portable operations experience in Oregon including Field Days and camping trips.  Joe's major interest is combining his love of travel with amateur radio operations.  His St Lucia call is J6/N7BF.

In 1971, Steve was licensed as WN2CZC and has been active since. His QTH has sprouted many towers and yagis since 1980, but the XYL is tolerant and plants flowers around the concrete bases. He is active with the WNY DX Assoc. and Orleans CO ARC. HIs log shows mostly CW and digital modes in the past few years. A life member of ARRL, his current DXCC count is 339 and has 7BDXCC. He currently operates RTTY and PSK with an Icom 7700, PW1 and Optibeams  OB11-5 and 40-30.

His first rig was a Johnson Adventurer and an HQ 145. After building a Heathkit HW-16, he knew he was hooked. In the 1980s, he upgraded at the FCC Office to Extra and began to think of DXpeditioning. It all started with PJ2, then came a succession of vacation ops on C6, VP2, VP9 and V2. Nothing fancy but fun.  The XYL likes to travel!

In 1990, he and three others were invited to be a part of UF7V, a joint Soviet–USA team to the Black Sea in Georgia. The military furnished ‘field accommodations’ and  power. Homebrew rigs and an Icom 725 kept us on the air for two weeks. Luckily, the USSR team spoke varying degrees of English and his Russian was fair. The operation has had far reaching consequences, lifelong friendships and in several return visits, operating as /UA3A and /UA6A.  His St Lucia call is J6/WF2S.

Tom was born in central Wisconsin.  He attended college then entered the US Navy serving on the USS Saratoga as a Radioman.  After the Navy, he returned to college to complete a degree in Sociology.  He went on to receive his Masters degree in Counseling.  The next 25 years, he spent in various managerial and administrative positions at Mid-State Technical College including the project management of the installation of a fibre-optic television network for numerous local colleges and Universities.  He retired in 2000.

Tom obtained his Amateur license in 1956 and has participated in numerous public service efforts and is a Volunteer Examiner.  His primary amateur radio interests include DXing, DXpeditioning, constructing amateur radio equipment, QRP activities.  He is five countries short of the DXCC Honor Roll.  His St Lucia call is J6/K9CJM.

Bill Tempel renewed hisinterest in ham radio in 2009 after nearly 50 years out of the hobby.  Originally licensed as KN0QLB in 1961.  I then upgraded to Conditional Class in 1962 as K0QLB.  College, marriage and a 20 year Air Force career interfered with ham radio.  He retired in 1987 and began a second career in various communications related fields.  He retired for good in 2005.  He returned to ham radio in 2009 and received his Technician Class (KJ4MGN) and General Class (W4WPT) licenses and his Amateur Extra Class in 2010 as AA4OC.  His first QSO was in January 2010 and since then he has achieved DXCC, WAC on three bands, and WPX...all on SSB.  He has "several" Buddipole antennas in his house for ease of tuning! This will be his first DXpedition.  His St Lucia call is J6/AA40C.

Guy was born in NM then grew up in southern ID.  He went to Oregon State University graduating in EE.  He had an engineering consulting business for 9 years then went to work for an avionics manufacturing company that was then purchased by UPS.  Various engineering projects led him to NJ with UPS.  He retired in 2010.  He was first licensed in 1963 as a teenager.
N7UN (aka “MacGUYver”) was a previous member of the FS/PJ7/PJ6 2009 St. Martin expedition and the 2010 J6/St Lucia as well as the 2011 J7/Dominica Buddipole DXpeditions.  He has operated from several of Colorado’s 14,000+ mountain tops with Steve/wG0AT, many US National Parks, and numerous portable locations on the Appalachian Trail, the Catskills, and the Adirondacks in the northeast.  Previously he was K7YYK, AA7QZ, and now his current call of N7UN. Contesting, DXing, and field portable QRP operations are his current interests.  He has 338 DXCC countries confirmed.  His long term goal is to live on a Colorado 14er mountain top with his trusty K2 QRP rig.  His St Lucia call is J68UN.

WU1B Barclay Thomas was born in Chicago, IL. and had his first exposure to amateur radio there at an early age, although it never reached the licensing stage until recently. Started building crystal radio sets then repairing and modifying old receivers while still in grade school. He finally got licensed in 2006 since retiring after many years working as an electronics and field service technician. Barclay enjoys operating from almost anywhere he can put up, or dangle, an antenna while on vacations and trips. First time with the Buddipole was while on a church mission trip into Honduras although this will be his first "true" DXpedition.  His St Lucia call is J6/WU1B.
