posted ‎‎Oct 7, 2009 5:12 AM‎‎ by Cardozo NLG

ATTENTION CARDOZO NLG MEMBERS:

We have been invited to a special free advance screening of WILLIAM KUNSTLER: DISTURBING THE UNIVERSE for New York City law school students. The screening will be followed by a panel with the filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler, and Michael Ratner, President, Center for Constitutional Rights.

***Print out the attached email for entrance.
Seating is limited and is on a first come, first serve basis, so arrive EARLY!***

Thursday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Columbia Law School
Jerome Greene Hall Room 101
435 West 116th Street (corner of Amsterdam Avenue)

Synopsis of the film (www.disturbingtheuniverse.com):

"In William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler explore the life of their father, the late radical civil rights lawyer. In the 1960s and 70s, Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. and represented the famed 'Chicago 8' activists who protested the Vietnam War. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or when the American Indian Movement stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee, they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer.

To his daughters, it seemed that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up, Kunstler represented some of the most reviled members of society, including rapists and assassins. This powerful film not only recounts the historic causes that Kunstler fought for; it also reveals a man that even his own daughters did not always understand, a man who risked public outrage and the safety of his family so that justice could serve all."

NYC-NLG Legal Observer Training

posted ‎‎Oct 4, 2009 5:12 PM‎‎ by Cardozo NLG

Hey, you know what's awesome?  The freedom of speech and assembly!  Help protect this right by being a legal observer with the NYC-National Lawyers Guild.  Come to our training Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. in VH 204, and then you'll be able to serve as a  legal observer at protests, demonstrations, and Critical Mass rallies in New York and elsewhere, working with the Mass Defense Committee of the NYC-NLG.

There's no time commitment, since you sign up to observe at protests when it fits your schedule.  So, even if you're not totally sure you can take on another commitment, you should come to the training anyway just in case.  At any rate, there'll be dinner and drinks served, and you'll get to hear from experienced legal observers and learn about NYC police tactics at protests.

Once again, the details:  National Lawyers Guild legal observer training, next Wednesday, Oct. 7  from 6-8 p.m, in VH 204
If you think you're into coming, it would be greatly appreciated if you could e-mail Caroline, at caroline.nagy@nyu.edu, so NYU will have an idea of how much food to get.  Or just show up!
