Realising that many people had caravans that were sitting in their sheds a good part of the time, an advertisement was placed in the local paper, resulting in the formation of the Mackay Caravan Club. The club’s first rally was in October 1999 with 14 financial members – people from many walks of life with much and varied interests, but one thing in common – the love of caravanning. The club has now expanded to 26 members who enjoy the monthly rallies which are held within a reasonable driving distance of Mackay. Occasionally safari rallies are undertaken, often on the way to a State Rally, so members have the opportunity of seeing more of our beautiful State in the company of friends. We try to keep our rallies fun and relaxing while enjoying various activities such as disc bowls, croquet, hoy, cards, trivia, games, walking, craft, barbeques, fishing, swimming (depending on the location and weather). Our fish to beat is a 1m barramundi – it sure was a beauty!! Also, if there is a local event (like the recent Finch Hatton Country & Western competition) we arrange our rally accordingly. For the last two years, we have joined with the North Queensland Club for a combined rally which has proved a great success, especially the “friendly” rivalry for the Inter-Club Bowls Trophy. Being central to both Mackay and Townsville, Bowen was chosen as the venue for these get-togethers. Members also benefit from the experience of one another. Often little groups will gather to discuss a problem or new piece of equipment and someone will usually have a solution or advice. Club meetings are held every two months separate from the rallies and are another good excuse (reason) to meet your caravanning friends. Most members stay for a meal after the meeting. Before becoming a member, people are asked to attend at least two rallies as a visitor after which an application form is completed and presented to the management committee.
