Captions Defined:
- Captions are defined as synchronized text equivalents of audio information in the same language as the audio, conveying not only speech content, but also non-speech information such as sound effects, music, laughter, and speaker identification and location.
- Closed captions must possess the option of being turned on or off at will.
- Open captions are printed on the video itself.
- Captions are not technically the same as sub-titles. Sub-titles are generally a language different than the language of the speaker. Subtitles convey conversation in text form. In some cases subtitles are accompanied with other sound information, but this is not always the norm.
Captions display the audio as text on the video screen in time with the multimedia content.
Captions Include:
- Speaker identification
- Sound effects
- Other relevant information such as tone of voice
- Timing indicators
