Outstanding Recruiting Night & Open House by the Boosters -- Many thanks to the Boosters who put on a fantastic grill-out in hosting our first recruiting night of the school year 18 August.  I may miss someone, but I'd like to give special thanks to the Spanglers for all the food work, the Brewers, the Mayfields, Deaton and Emmons families.  They were the ones who brainstormed the event and pulled it off.  What a feast!   Thanks to the rest of you who generously donated food as well.  Special thanks to Hannah Brewer for her new PowerPoint that highlighted our activities, and to Kiki Burke for updating the photo board.  We will report on Boosters membership later, and new cadet members as well.  We had at least 10 cadet visitors, and probably 8 of them walked away with applications.  So cadets, please encourage those friends you brought to join.  They, too, can eventually learn how to do "patient packaging" to amaze their friends and families.  (Posted Aug 2011)

KY073 Wins Two Top Awards -- For the first time in its history, KY073 is the recipient of two top awards in the same year.  KY073 seniors and cadets have been named as the 2010 Squadron of Merit for the Kentucky Wing.  Many factors went into that award, but the hard work of our seniors and cadets at the April SAREX and May SAREVAL at Lunken no doubt played a large role.  In addition, KY073 cadets and seniors serve in a host of Wing leadership positions.  In addition, KY073 was recognized by National CAP as a 2010 Quality Cadet Unit.  It is the ONLY cadet squadron in Greater Cincinnati to receive that distinction, and one of only 118 cadet units in the country to be so recognized.  KY073 met five of the eight difficult national criteria for the award (growth, retention, O-rides, adult leadership, encampments) and came within a hair's breadth of meeting the sixth (aerospace excellence) during calendar 2010.  The remaining two criteria were numbers of Wright Brothers promotions and officer promotions, and KY073 has no plans to change its promotion criteria simply to hit target numbers in those areas.  Thanks so much to the dozens of our seniors and parents who helped make these awards possible.  (Posted January 2011)

Jamie Baumer and cadets Stephanie Bridges, Matthew Deaton, Darylie Mills. Cory Spangler, Joseph Schmidlapp and Sarah Hart worked Saturday before departing for the Hospice fund-raiser.  The ground teams pulled long hours in acquiring all their targets in difficult searches across central Indiana.  The exercise was designed to simulate events that occurred during the Western Kentucky ice storm of 2009 and other regional disasters.  It was the cadets’ first exercise in Indiana and first glimpse at Camp Atturbury, where the National Emergency Services Academy is held annually.  This was an important event for the Kentucky Wing and its first opportunity to staff a SAREX with personnel from Michigan and Wisconsin.  In all Kentucky fielded five ground teams and provided key staff for this complex exercise, as well as air crews.  (Posted November 2010)

New Battery, Thanks to Lt. Schababerle -- We'd like to express our deepest appreciation to Lt. Mark Schababerle for changing the battery in the KY073 van.  The battery had to be jumped three times in the last three months.  In fact, a number of seniors have contributed their time toward needed van maintenance this year.  We have replaced all the tires, all the brakes and the emergency brake.  We have fixed the spare tire mount system.  We have secured the fire extinguisher and other items, replaced maps and updated the vehicle log book.  Oil has been changed regularly.  This would not have been possible without the help of Lt. Schababerle and seniors Jamie Baumer, Anthony Fedrick, George Stinson, Tim Anderson, Kiki Burke and Steve Burke at KY073, as well as Col. Bob Koob and Col. Jim Gutermuth at Wing.  (Posted November 2010)

Outstanding Training at Red River Gorge FTX -- Eleven KY073 cadets and seniors joined with the Bardstown squadron for the fourth annual Red River Gorge FTX (operation Enduring Ties) 22-25 July.  The FTX was the brainchild of Maj. Burke's simulated bear snoring.  Parents should be advised that the Gorge cadets have developed a decided affinity for Ale 81.  (Posted July 2010)

Online Cadet Testing Now in Effect -- All cadets now  have the option of continuing with paper achievement tests, or taking leadership tests online.  However -- and this is a big "however" -- the new on-line tests will be based on the new "Learn to Lead" cadet texts and NOT on the current Leadership for the 21st Century texts.  If you want to test on-line instead of at squadron, you must download the new Learn to Lead texts or order a copy from Vanguard.  All cadets who join after 1 July 2010 will not have an option -- they will have to test on-line for leadership achievements, and National CAP will send them the new Learn to Lead texts instead of the current editions.  However, current cadets apparently WILL have the option for a long time.  Aerospace testing also may be done on-line, or at the squadron.  National says once you commit to on-line testing, you must continue with it and can't go back to paper.  All Wright Brothers and Mitchell exams will continue to be on paper at squadron, however.  For more information, go to the following link:  http://capmembers.com/cadet_programs/library/learn_to_lead.cfm  (Posted July 2010)

Pendery Going ROTC at Ohio State – C/2Lt Chase Pendery began attending Ohio State University in September 2010 on an Air Force ROTC scholarship.  I attribute my good fortune to my CAP experience,” Pendery said.  “Lots of applicants had great test scores and physical fitness numbers, but I firmly believe it was my leadership experience through CAP that earned me my scholarship.”  Pendery completed an outstanding tenure at Highlands High, Ft. Thomas, by graduating with a Commonwealth Diploma.  He also was named a National Merit Scholar, a first for a KY073 cadet.  The hard work paid off for Pendery with a four-year ROTC scholarship at OSU, and he is one of only four incoming ROTC cadets with free room and board.  Besides his academic accomplishments, Pendery says he is almost as proud of his door-to-door efforts in his father’s recent political primary victory.  (Posted July 2010)

SAREVAL Grade:  Excellent! –
The Air Force was “very happy” with the performance of Kentucky Wing emergency services and awarded it an “excellent” overall rating at the SAREVAL 14-16 May.  Therefore, the Wing will continue to obtain Air Force funding for search-and-rescue and disaster-relief work for the next two years!  KY073 cadets and seniors were involved in virtually every area of the Wing ES team and played a huge role in this success.  This was no cakewalk evaluation.  The Air Force tripled the number and variety of ground tasks compared with two years ago, and we got ‘er done!  Lt. Jamie Baumer, C/1Lt Colin Burke, and C/CMSgt Cory Baumer led three of the five ground teams – all of which accomplished every one of their taskings over an intense day and a half.  Ensuring our success at mission base were cadets Nathan Pappas and Christian Davis in communication, as well as Dan Hagedorn and Aran Coughlan in photo processing.  Cadets Doug Kaiser, Jared Rizzo, Christian Vara, Hannah Brewer, Jacob Heath, Joseph Alexander, Blake Emmons, Matt Deaton, Stephen Kierein, and Kandahar Brewer ensured our success on ground teams.  Capt. Steve Burke and Maj. Jim Baker of Lexington ran ground-branch operations, which received an “excellent” rating.

Cadets participating in the April SAREX at Lunken, which served as a warm-up to the SAREVAL, were Colin Burke as GTL, Cory Baumer, Jacob Bridges, Stephanie Bridges, Hannah Brewer, Kandahar Brewer, Christian Davis, Matt Deaton, Blake Emmons, Jacob Heath, Doug Kaiser, Stephen Kierein,
and Nathan Pappas(Posted May 2010)

Outstanding NCO-Airman School --
KY073 led the way with cadets and seniors attending the inaugural NCO-Airman School 19-21 March at Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center.  Cadets Colin Burke, Chase Pendery and Cory Baumer led the cadet staff that organized and taught the school.  Jacob Bridges, Nathan Pappas, Stephanie Bridges, Jared Rizzo and Doug Kaiser composed the lion's share of the Alpha Senior NCO class.  Dan Hagedorn, Christian Davis and Christian Vara were part of the enthusiastic Bravo Junior NCO class.  Hannah Brewer, Jacob Heath, Aran Coughlan, Kandahar Brewer, Blake Emmons and Matthew Deaton graduated from the Charlie Airman Class, with Emmons and Deaton also completing the Great Start program for their Curry Achievement.  Seniors Jamie Baumer and Kiki Burke completed the Training Leaders of Cadets professional development class, which was co-taught by Capt. Steve Burke.  They also were instrumental in driving, teaching and counseling cadets and cadet staff.  Our eternal appreciation goes to Boone 050 senior William Robertson for transporting five 073 cadets to the school and his cool demeanor in safely dealing with a highway blowout on the way to Wendell Ford.  This was a landmark event in Kentucky cadet programs, and we are proud especially for Burke, Pendery and Baumer for leading the school.  (Posted March 2010)

Holiday Ground FTX Report -- Snow and cold did not deter KY073 cadets from the Holiday Ground FTX with Boone County 050.  A sunny day made the training conditions much better.  Lt. Jamie Baumer and Capt. Steve Burke trained Cadet Jacob Heath and four others in basic ground team skills toward UDF and GTM3 ratings.  C/2Lt Colin Burke led the advanced group of six that included Sgts. Col. Mike Wendlegast, director of Wing cadet programs.  Cadets participated in behind-the scenes tours and briefings at the Capitol, Supreme Court, State Department, Pentagon, CIA,  Arlington Cemetery and more.  The week culminated with Legislative Day, in which Burke joined with KY Wing Commander Bob Koob and Wing legislative liaison Don Morgan in visiting congressmen Geoff Davis and Ben Chandler.  CLA is an academically-focused activity that includes seminars, readings, and group projects and required six weeks of preparatory readings and papers.  (Posted March 2010)

Squadron Patch Is Here! -- Our new squadron patches arrived 11 Feb, and we began distributing them to the cadets and seniors.  The first set of patches are free to our fund-raising cadets and $2 thereafter  For now we have only the iron-on/stitch-ons.  Velcros have been ordered but we don't known when they will arrive.  This project has been in the works for more than a year and was able to be completed because of the successful fund-raising efforts of the cadets.  Patch is worn on the right-hand front pocket of the BDU blouse and should be sewn as soon as possible before the cadet stands for a review board.  C/2Lt Colin Burke designed the patch and spearheaded this project.  The background colors are Air Force blue for air superiority and red for ground superiority.  The double eagle represents air and ground crews as well as seniors and cadets in our composite squadron. Thanks for Taking Care of BDUs -- Thanks to the cadets who showed up at squadron on Saturday 23 Jan to move boxes of BDUs and Blues uniforms from storage.  Many thanks also to Maj. Lynda Kilbourne, who has been storing these uniforms in Wilder for almost two years, after we rescued them from the moldy Connex box that is now gone.  These uniforms are now available at squadron to the cadets for sign-out.  They belong to the squadron and cadets are free to use them.  However, cadets are obligated to return them to squadron if they outgrow the uniform or when they eventually leave CAP.  (Posted January 2010)

Hazard SAREX Report -- For the third straight year, KY073 cadets trained and led the way at the Mountain SAREX in Hazard, 23-25 Oct.  Sgt. Cory Baumer trained as a ground team leader and helped lead several searches, as did Lt. Colin Burke.  Lt. Burke also led the medic team that took care of under-the-weather cadets and seniors.  Sgts. Jacob Bridges, Stephanie Bridges, Jacob Rizzo, and Doug Kaiser also provided leadership on their ground and UDF teams and trained new cadets from Kentucky in dozens of tasks.  Cadets Dennis Bales and Dillon O'Hara received valuable training in this, their first SAREX.  Capt. Steve Burke surved as a ground branch director.  Many thanks to Col. Danny Adams, Capt. Mike Hughes, the Hazard Red Cross and First Presbyterian Church for keeping us out of the cold and rain and keeping all of us very well-fed.  (Posted October 2009)

Pendery is National Merit Semifinalist -- On the academic front, C/CMSgt. Chase Pendery has been named a National Merit Semifinalist, which is just short of national merit scholar.  This is an outstanding academic achievement that most 073 cadets can only dream about.  This is the second big academic achievement among our cadets in the past year.  C/SSgt. Nathan Pappas was named to the Governor’s Scholars Program for the Arts and spent almost a month studying in Lexington, and Pendery spent almost a month at Center College in Danville in the traditional Governor’s Scholars Program.  (Posted October 2009)

Pendery solos --
C/CMSgt Chase Pendery achieved the pinnacle of excellence at National Flight Academy.  See press release and photo attached below.  Pendery flew a CAP Cessna solo upon completion of his ground instruction and training.  Only the top cadets at this flight academy in Oshkosh, Wis., are allowed to solo.  Sgt. Pendery's perseverance and dedication to realize his dream show what CAP cadets can achieve.  (Posted July 2009)
