Latest KY073 News and Events

Three Promoted at FTX & Great Start -- KY073's winter FTX culminated with the promotions of three cadets 3-4 Feb.  Completing the Great Start program and becoming C/Airmen were new members Kenny Ballard, Robert Gilb, and Colin Hartman.  They also joined Brandon Duesing, Collin Walker, Mason Khalaj, Stephen Kierein, Noah Darpel, Kandahar Brewer, Kyle Devoto and Darylie Mills in basic and advanced ground-team training.  Leading the Great Start training was Blake Emmons, assisted by Cory Spangler.  Leading the GT training were Jared Rizzo and Jacob Heath, with former KY073 cadet commander Doug Kaiser training as ground-branch director.  Lt. Jamie Baumer, Capt. Anthony Fedrick and Capt. Steve Burke provided event guidance, and Lt. Todd Hamiter stopped by to observe some of the Friday training.  All worked together to accomplish a lot in just 25 hours!

Another National CAP Quality Cadet Unit Award -- KY073 has repeated as a National Quality Cadet Unit for 2011.  KY073 was among only 60 units in the United States to repeat the award from 2010.  The squadron met 6 of 8 criteria in winning the award, including Aerospace Excellence, number of o-rides, number of Wright Brothers cadets, and number of encampments.  Three squadrons where KY073 cadets had transferred or been working also received the 2011 QCU award -- Lexington 222 (Cory Baumer), Bowling Green 057 (Doug Kaiser) and Savannah GA077 (Colin Burke).  Among Kentucky squadrons, Bowling Green 057 was a repeat winner, and Lexington 222 was a first-time winner.  No other Kentucky squadrons won the award.  Nationally, there were 207 winners (almost double from 118 last year) among 1,067 cadet units.  Lunken Composite Squadron was the only other Cincinnati-area squadron to win this year.  Last year, KY073 was the only winner for all of Greater Cincinnati.

Cadets Respond to Call for Help from Hospice -- Our core value of volunteer service extends beyond the time we are in uniform, and KY073 cadets responded to call for help 30 Jan.  Hospice of Northern Kentucky sent out a plea to help unpack a disabled family who had moved to Covington from Florida.  Helping that move were Blake Emmons, Darylie Mills, Stephen Kierein, Kandahar Brewer, and Mason Khalaj, along with Capt. Steve Burke.  The cadets were so efficient that they ended up spending more eating afterward than they did moving dozens of pieces of furniture and boxes up and down several flights of stairs.

Bridges Heading to Civic Leadership Academy --
C/2Lt Stephanie Bridges becomes only the second Kentucky cadet to be selected to Civil Air Patrol's prestigious Civic Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C.  Bridges will visit a number of government agencies when CLA convenes in late February and will participate in numerous public policy discussions.  Bridges also will visit Kentucky congressmen to tell them about the benefits of CAP.  The only other Kentucky cadet to attend Civic Leadership Academy was also from KY073, Colin Burke, and photos of that trip can be seen on the KY073 cadet website.

Rizzo Will Lead 3rd KYWG NCO-Airman School -- C/2Lt Jared Rizzo has been chosen by the KYWG Cadet Advisory Council to lead the 3rd annual NCO-Airman School.  The school provides extra training to all non-coms and airman on how to conduct themselves and their work to benefit their community, state and nation.  As part of the school, new cadets also can earn their first stripe through the Great Start Program.  Rizzo becomes the second KY073 cadet in three years to lead the school.

ABUs Update from National -- When will CAP uniforms shift to digital camo? That questions arises repeatedly, and the answer is that we will be in woodland camo BDUs for at least another year.  The Air Force prohibits transfer of the new ABUs to CAP members at present.  The CAP National Board will be reconsidering the entire uniform policy at the summer boards in August 2012.  Until then, enjoy your woodland camo!

Steve Burke were there for the seniors and Boosters.

Lunken Airport Days Scavenger Hunt & Color Guard -- KY073 kicked off its Aerospace Excellence program 10-11 Sept with a scavenger hunt at Lunken Airport.  The KY073 Color Guard posted the colors both days, including a special September 11 remembrance.  The event was a joint project with squadrons from Boone County KY05 and Lunken OH078.  Attending were Christian Davis, Blake Emmons, Hannah Brewer, Darylie Mills, Kandahar Brewer, Lance Bacon, Noah Darpel, Cory Spangler, Kyle Devoto and Stephen Kierein.  Special thanks go out to Lt. Todd Hamiter driving the van and Capt Anthony Fedrick flying.  Many thanks to Maj. George Stinson for securing the funding and to KYWG commander Col. Bob Koob for personally overseeing the operation and serving as flight release officer.  Col. Paul Osborne, as always, did an outstanding job organizing the glider crews.

New Facebook Page for KY073 Cadets --
KY073 has finally entered the social media realm by establishing a Facebook organizational page.  Please click on the link on the main cadet web pages, or search for "Ky073 Cadets - Campbell County Civil Air Patrol."  The main cadet news will continue to flow on the KY073 webpages.  However, the Facebook page will allow us to link and share photos more easily and post information.  So please "friend" us.  Also be on the lookout for Tweets in the near future.

Outstanding Recruiting Night & Open House by the Boosters -- Many thanks to the Boosters who put on a fantastic grill-out in hosting our first recruiting night of the school year 18 August.  I may miss someone, but I'd like to give special thanks to the Spanglers for all the food work, the Brewers, the Mayfields, Deaton and Emmons families.  They were the ones who brainstormed the event and pulled it off.  What a feast!   Thanks to the rest of you who generously donated food as well.  Special thanks to Hannah Brewer for her new PowerPoint that highlighted our activities, and to Kiki Burke for updating the photo board.  We will report on Boosters membership later, and new cadet members as well.  We had at least 10 cadet visitors, and probably 8 of them walked away with applications.  So cadets, please encourage those friends you brought to join.  They, too, can eventually learn how to do "patient packaging" to amaze their friends and families.

National CAP Annual Conference & Boards --
KY073 cadet leaders and seniors got "face time" with National CAP's leaders at the Annual Conference & Boards in Louisville 19-20 August. Special recognition goes to Mason Khalaj, who attended programs in gliders, new DF equipment, the CyberPatriot competition (you may hear more about that soon), among others.  Capt. Steve Burke attended various cadet programs and Drug Demand Reduction seminars, and also found time to brainstorm 2011-12 KYWG cadet activities with others throughout the Wing.  Other KY073 cadets attended the National Cadet Advisory Council feedback session.  Cadets Woodward, Taylor, Kruger, and Smithson from Lexington 222 performed Color Guard and other formal duties during the convention, under the direction of Capt. Ryan Kenley.  The Kentucky Wing received an award as the top Emergency Services unit in the Great Lakes Region for 2010-11.  C/Sgt. Avery Yates from Paducah received the Silver Medal of Valor from CAP National Commander Amy Courter for helping save his grandparents in a canoeing accident in 2010.  Yates has been with us on two of our Hawk Mountain excursions.

Steve Burke serves as the KYWG CAC senior adviser.

Heat, Rain, Bugs Shorten Gorge Training --
Nature was working against us at the annual Operation Enduring Ties training 28-30 July at Red River Gorge.  Despite heat, bugs, and rain, cadets and seniors from KY073, Bardstown KY131 and Louisville 123 completed a number of ground-team tasks and searches.  They also enjoyed the spectacular Gorge scenery, which included an extended swim in the Red River itself.   It was the 15th ground team event since April 2010 for KY073.  Jared Rizzo, Jacob Bridges and Matt Deaton helped lead the training, with Darylie Mills, Kandahar Brewer and Lance Bacon on ground teams.  Lt. Jamie Baumer and Capt. Steve Burke served as ground branch directors, along with Lt. David Fain of Bardstown.  Parker of Hovis of Louisville, and David Fain, Josh Morgan, Gennasea Fain and Matthew Kliessendorf of Bardstown rounded out the training group.

Cadets Again Venture Out to National Activities -- KY073 cadets are in the process of completing another outstanding summer at national special activities.  Finishing their first year at National Honor Guard Academy in Maryland were Blake Emmons and Darylie Mills.  They were the first KY073 cadets in five years to attend that academy.   Doug Kaiser became the the third KY073 cadet in three years to attend the prestigious National Blue Beret air marshaling event in Oshkosh, Wis.  The National Emergency Services Academy at Ft. Atturbury, Ind., was also a favorite, with Cory Spangler and Mason Khalaj completing the basic ground team course, and Khalaj, Mills and Hannah Brewer completeing advanced ground studies.  In all, 13 of KY073's cadets and two seniors attended national activities.

Burke Becomes Hawk's 240th Expert Ranger --
KY073's Colin Burke entered elite company at the 2011
Hawk Mountain Ranger Summer School 9-17 July 2011.  Burke earned his Expert Ranger grade and his
black belt on staff.  He is Black Belt No. 240, meaning he is one of only 240 people to earn that honor in the 55-year history of the school.  Burke earned this achievement while also serving as commander of the Medic (Mike) Squadron.  No other Kentucky or Great Lakes Region cadet had ever commanded any squadron at CAP's wilderness search-and-rescue school, much less the physically and mentally demanding medic squadron.  Burke became the first Kentucky cadet to qualify as a Hawk medic in 2007 and to serve on the staff at the school.  Burke also was the first Kentucky cadet to be selected for CAP's Civic Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C., and was the first KY073 member to serve as cadet commander at the GLR-South Basic Encampment, now know as the Kentucky Wing Encampment.

Rizzo, Medics Lead List of Hawk Achievements --
Jared Rizzo became only the second Kentucky cadet to earn the distinction of Medic First Class and his red scarf at Hawk Mountain Ranger School 2011.  KY073's Matt Deaton, Jacob Heath, and Christian Davis earned green scarves as cadet medics at Hawk and now are eligible to serve on Hawk's staff.  Completing the list of Hawk achievements were Joseph Schmidlapp and Kyle Devoto who earned Ranger grade in the Advanced (Alpha) Squadron and Kandahar Brewer.  Capts. Anthony Fedrick and Steve Burke completed Hawk's senior course.  Like the cadets, their routine included obstacle course, three-day hike with full gear, rappelling, and ground skills.  Lt. Col. Les Lewis of Ewing, Ky.; Parker Hovis of Louisville; and Dustin Graham rounded out the Kentucky contingent at Hawk, with Graham of Boone County 050 serving as staff medic for the Alpha Squadron. Click here for slideshow.  Tons of photos in the Photo Gallery and the Hawk Facebook pages.

KY073 Participates in KYWG SAREVAL – KY073 cadets Doug Kaiser, Stephen Kierein and Mason Khalaj, along with Lt. Jamie Baumer participated on 9 July 2011 in the SAREVAL at KY Wing HQ in Frankfort.  The Wing was evaluated by multiple U.S. Air Force officers and enlisted personnel, who were closely watching processes, procedures and behaviors to ensure that our wing is up to their standards for emergency services operations.  Preliminary results are that our SAREVAL was a success, and a detailed report will follow.  Kaiser and Lt. Baumer were two of the three Ground Team Leaders (GTL) for the multiple exercises.  Many thanks to these KY073 members who were able to go and who performed in a professional and outstanding manner.  A number of KY073 seniors and cadets who normally are mainstays at Wing SAR events were absent this year due to mulitiplie conflicts with national special activities.

Campbell KY216 was named Cadet of the Year for 2010-11, and C/2Lt Brandon Burke was named Junior Officer of the Year.
