The family of Cecil Lopes III Mourn his death Young man going to college gunned down


NEW BEDFORD -- Cecil M. "The Diesel" Lopes III, 18, of New Bedford, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004.

Born in New Bedford, the son of Cheryl Andrews and Cecil
M. Lopes Jr., he had lived in New Bedford all of his life. Cecil was a graduate of New Bedford High School, where he was a member of the football team, and was attending UMass Dartmouth.

He was a shining star who loved to play football and it was his dream to play professional football.

Cecil loved to blast his music while driving "Nen" crazy, and he loved being with his friends and playing PlayStation 2.

He loved to dress sharp, was a sneaker fanatic who had them all, and he always had to be coordinated. Most of all, he was known for his sweet, penetrating smile, his manners and his integrity.

Survivors include his parents; six siblings, Unique Lopes, Cyrel Lopes, Joycelyn Lopes, Chaquana Lopes, Jordan Andrews and Destinee Andrews; his paternal grandparents, Phyllis Lopes and Cecil Lopes Sr.; his maternal grandparents, Gertrude Sylvia and Morris Andrews Sr.; his paternal great-grandmother, Avis Lopes; his aunt, Deirdre Lopes; a cousin, Jarell Ervin; and many other cousins.
