BROCKTON, Mass. -- The mother of the man accused of killing two people and injuring another in a racially-motivated shooting spree apologized to the victim's families and said she cannot support what her son did.

Keith Luke, 22, is accused of shooting three people on Clinton Street, killing two of them, including his former neighbor and a homeless man who was pushing a shopping cart filled with cans, and leading police on a chase through Brockton.

Luke pleaded not guilty Thursday to two counts of murder, three counts of armed assault with intent to murder, one count of aggravated rape, one count of kidnapping and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police said Luke went on a violent rampage in which he targeted "non-whites," Jews and Hispanics.

Luke's former neighbor, Selma Goncalves, 20, and Arlindo Depina Goncalves, 72, a homeless man who is not related to the other victim, were killed.

"I just wish I could take the pain away from the family and bring that girl back," Dara Luke said.

Selma Goncalves' older sister was seriously injured and remained hospitalized on Friday.

"I am so sorry. I wish it was me and not that beautiful girl. I am so sorry," Dara Luke said.

Dara Luke said she still loves her son, but does not support what he did.

"Unconditionally. But I could not go to the arraignment to support him. I can't support what he did," she said.

The Brockton Enterprise reported that Luke's father, David Luke, 42, was arrested by police Thursday and was taken to a treatment facility in Fall River. The paper said he threatened to kill police officers during his arrest.
