The Ministry of Justice hopes to have the results of the investigations into the murder of the former TACV Cabo Verde Airlines flight attend inside São Martinho prison, where he was awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges, in his possession within two weeks. Justice Minister José Manuel Andrade has expressed caution in drawing any conclusions regarding the death of the former flight attendant “until we have the results of the administrative inquiry in our hands.” What is certain, however, is that security measures in the country’s penitentiaries will continue to be reinforced, namely through the introduction of video surveillance systems and stricter controls on visits. According to the Minister of Justice, the prison system will soon be reinforced by an additional 30 professionals, who will complete their specialized training in February. In addition, the Ministry of Justice hopes to begin construction of a new prison on the island of Sal before the end of this month, and complete remodeling work on the São Martinho prison this year. Caló died after being shot three times in his prison cell on December 6, 2007 in an apparent contract killing. The victim had told officials of various death threats he had received, apparently because he had revealed the name of the individual for whom he was transporting the cocaine he was arrested in possession of earlier in the year. One of the suspects in the crime is Giboli, who is serving a 19-year sentence for murder. |
