Filipe A. Barros

 PROVIDENCE -- Filipe Alino Gomes Barros, 18, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, at Rhode Island Trauma Center after a shooting Saturday night in New Bedford. He was the son of Julia Pires of New Bedford and Roosevelt Barros of Boston. 
 Born in Boston, Mr. Barros lived in Dorchester. He lived in the South End of New Bedford for 13 years. 
 He attended New Bedford High School. 
 He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, Roxbury. 
 Active in the South End community, he was a member of Dennison Memorial for six years and the South First Street Association. He volunteered for Positively Youth, a drug-free youth program. 
 He was a member of the Upward Bound Program for three years, including the summer program. 
 He enjoyed working out, boxing, playing football and soccer and listening to hip hop and Cape Verdean music. 
 In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Rolando Barros and Taijour Fernandes, both of New Bedford, and Rosildo Pires of Boston; three sisters, Rosa Pires and Rolanda Barros, both of New Bedford, and Julianna Pires of New York; his maternal grandparents, Alina (Gomes) and Benjamin Pires of Boston; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. 
 A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Assumption Church.
