Olivio Giovanni Gottin, "Padre Pio," 75, of Roxbury died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999. Padre Pio, who often said Mass in Crioulo at Our Lady of Assumption church in New Bedford, was also known for his work in the Cape Verdean community. "My work in New Bedford is very simple," he once said. "It is to conserve the Cape Verdeans' existence." Born in Vicenza, Italy, he was the son of the late Andrea and Giacomina Mosele Gottin. Padre Pio served in Fogo and Brava, Cape Verde, for 51 years. He came to the United States in 1978 to served in New England. He was a member of every Cape Verde organization in the United States. He received a prestige medal from the Cape Verdean government when he celebrated his 50-year anniversary of being ordained a Franciscan priest. He was the first person in Cape Verde, not a native, to be made a citizen there, in 1991. His funeral Mass will be at noon Saturday at St. Patrick's Church, 400 Dudley St., Roxbury.
