ANTONIO DOS REIS TEIXEIRA, 77, of Wilson Avenue, Rumford, a retired merchant captain, died yesterday at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence.

He was the husband of Maria (da Luz) Teixeira. Born in Cape Verde, a son of the late Manuel W. and Olimpia (Monteiro) Teixeira, he came to this country in 1944, and had lived in Seekonk before settling in Rumford in 1980.

Mr. Teixeira was a captain in the merchant marine at Moore McCormack Lines Inc. for many years, retiring in 1996, and was a member of the Boston Marine Society.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Olimpia Teixeira of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ginger H. Teixeira of Miami, Fla.; three sons, Antonio Texeira Jr. in Virginia, Carlos Texeira of Staten Island, N.Y., and Teodora Teixeira of Miami; a stepson, Nery Lucio Fernandes of East Providence; two sisters, Maria Fatima Fernandes in Cape Verde and Maria Natalina Monteiro Lima of East Providence; three brothers, Carlos Monteiro Lima in Argentina, Alberto Monteiro Lima in The Netherlands, and Adriano Monteiro Lima in Brazil; and nine grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Daniel Monteiro Lima.

A prayer service will be held tomorrow at 8 p.m. in Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway. Burial will be private.
