| Jose "Joe" Gomes | | | Gomes, Jose (Joe) Age 77 of Canton, went home to be with the Lord on St. Joseph's Day, March 19, 2009. His last moments were spent at home along side his loving wife, Bay of 53 years and devoted family members. Born September 8, 1931 in Brava, Cape Verde Islands, Joe came to the United States at 17 years of age in 1949. Was a loyal employee of Canton Mallable/Ohio Cast Products for 53 years retiring in 1997. Upon retirement, Joe spent his golden years devoted to his cherished great-granddaughter, Kahprice. Joe took pride in working in his large garden, enjoyed card games with the guys, and meeting his friends for coffee at McDonalds each morning. All those who were blessed to be a part of Joe's life would agree that he was a gentle soul who had a heart of gold. He was an affectionate companion to his wife and never questioned helping those in need. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, John and Domingas Gomes; father-in-law, Franciscio Depina; mother-in-law, Maria Gonsalves; son, John Gomes; and a sister, Maria Tavares. Survived by his wife, Belmira (Bella) Gomes; son, Francisco (Nicolette) Gomes of Maui; grandson, Francisco Gomes II; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Julio (Dorothy) Gomes of Canton, Ben (Helen) Gomes of Rhode Island; sisters, Edith (Joao) Gonsalves of Rhode Island and Dolores (John) Gomes of Rhode Island; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, in St. Paul's Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Lewis F. Gaetano officiating. Friends may call Sunday 4-8 p.m. in the Waltner-SIMCHAK Funeral Home where a Prayer Vigil will be held at 3:30 p.m. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
