He was the husband of Elsie (Amado) Gomes and son of the late Manuel and Frances (Duarte) Gomes. Born in New Bedford, he was a lifelong resident of Fairhaven and a 1940 graduate of Fairhaven High School. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Fairhaven. Mr. Gomes was a truck driver for 29 years for Lawrence Ready Mix Concrete. He retired in 1984. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of the Fairhaven Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2892 and the Fairhaven American Legion Post 166. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 59. Survivors include his widow; three sons, Rudolph Gomes and John Gomes, both of Hyannis, and Albert Gomes of New Bedford; two daughters, Mary Anna Galvao and Ida Almeida, both of New Bedford; a brother, Joseph Gomes of New Bedford; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John Gomes and Mary Pimentel. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Church. Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. |
