Inacia P. "Nancy" Geter    

GETER Inacia "Nancy" P. Geter, age 80, of Bridgeport died Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at home. "Nancy" was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport, educated in the city public school system. A graduate of Central High School, "Nancy" received a B.S. from Western Connecticut State University in elementary education and was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi honor society. She received a MS and 6th year certificate from the University of Bridgeport. After 20 years teaching at Waltersville and Shelton Schools, she became an administrator in developmental programs serving as coordinator of parent activities, director of teacher aide training and supervisor of Follow Thru Early Childhood Education and finally as Director of Federal and State Programs. In 1991, she became a member of the Bridgeport Board of Education and served in various capacities until her death. She became the first Black elected to be president of the Board in 1998. She was active with Hall Neighborhood House, the Cape Verdean Auxiliary, Les Treize Business and Professional Women"s Club, Greater Bridgeport Negro Business and Professional Women"s Club of which she was founder and former president. Nancy was also an active member of the Opera New England Board, the Greater Bridgeport Democratic Women"s Club, the National Political Congress of Black Women, the Greater Bridgeport Adolescent Pregnancy Program Board and the Bridgeport Boys Choir. Her most recent awards include the YMCA Salute to Women, NAACP Freedom Fund Education Award, Alpha Kappa Alpha Heritage Award, Cape Verdean Women"s Leadership Award, Negro Business and Professional Women"s Sojourner Truth Award and the Housatonic Council of Girl Scout"s Women of Distinction Award. Her husband Robert E. Geter predeceased her. Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Geter; a granddaughter, Laura Inacia Geter; and a host of nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Les Treize Scholarship Fund c/o Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation, 211 State Street, Bridgeport, CT 06604. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 275 Union Avenue, Bridgeport with Father Fred Saviano, officiating. Interment will take place in St. Michael"s Cemetery, Stratford. Friends are invited to the viewing Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the church. A wake service will take place 7:30 p.m. Morton"s Mortuary, 25 Margaret E. Morton Lane, Bridgeport is in charge of arrangements.
