| Abel Gomes | | |  GOMES, ABEL, 88, of Wampanoag Trail died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Waterview Villa. He was the husband of Mariana (Rodrigues) Gomes.
He was born in Brava, Cape Verde Islands a son of the late Augusto and Carolina (Lomba) Gomes.
Mr. Gomes was a Merchant Marine for McAllister Brothers Corporation for many years before retiring. He was a member of the American Merchant Marine Veterans, New England Chapter. Mr. Gomes was a survivor of S.S. Black Point, which was sunk by a German submarine in Block Island Sound in 1945.
Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Domingo A. Gomes of Providence, Anthony A. Gomes of San Diego, Calif. and Abel Gomes Jr. of Altamonte Springs, Fla. one sister, Maria Batista of Pawtucket and three granddaughters. He was the brother of the late Izolina Lomba, Maria Pires, Francisco and Jose Gomes.
His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:00 A.M.from the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Ave. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in St. Martha Church, Pawtucket Ave. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours Friday 2-4 and 7-9.
