He was the former husband of Amada (Vasqeuz) Gilmete and son of the late Eugenia (Gomes) and Matthew Gilmete. Born in the Cape Verdean Islands, he lived in New Bedford for many years before moving to Texas. Mr. Gilmete was employed by Exxon Company as a merchant seaman for 20 years until his retirement. Survivors include three daughters, Eugenia Ortiz, Linda Gilmete and Marie Lopes, all of New Bedford; a son, Matthew Gilmete of Baytown; a stepson, Jessy Quijano of Baytown; two brothers, Zeferino Gomes of South Dartmouth and John Gomes of Brockton; three sisters, Elaine Gomes of Pawtucket, R.I. and Maria and Clara Gomes, both of Darkar, Africa; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
