JOSE S. GOMES, 78, of Capitol Street, a retired janitor, died Wednesday at Miriam Hospital, Providence.

He was the husband of Ana (Nunes) Gomes. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, a son of the late Joao F. and Maria (Santiago) Gomes, he came to this country 27 years ago and settled in Boston.

Mr. Gomes had been a janitor at Providence Braid Co. for many years before he retired.

Besides his wife, he leaves six daughters, Maria Delgado, Eugenia Fernandes, Alice Xavier, Candida DePina, Anita Fernandes and Joanna Gibau, all of Pawtucket; four sons, Jose Junior Gomes in Cape Verde, and Joao, Antonio and Daniel Gomes, all of Pawtucket; two sisters, Francisca Gomes in Cape Verde and Maria Gomes of Pawtucket; a brother, Manuel Joao Gomes in Cape Verde; and 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Antonio Gomes.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 7:45 a.m. from Merrick R. Williams Funeral Home, 530 Smithfield Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, High Street. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary Cemetery.
