Gilbert L. Mendes


 PHILADELPHIA -- Gilbert Louis Mendes, known as "Gil" to his many friends and relatives, died Monday, March 19, 2001. 
 He was born on Nov. 13, 1938, in New Bedford, Mass., son of the late Albert and Marjorie Mendes. His youth and education was spent in New Bedford. 
 Mr. Mendes enlisted in the Marine Corps on Jan. 7, 1958, where he served for four years as a rifleman and earned the badge of Rifle Sharpshooter. 
 Upon his honorable discharge in 1963, Mr. Mendes relocated to Philadelphia, where he was employed briefly as a construction worker. 
 During that time, he became a member of Henry Hopkins American Legion Post 881 where he was an active member for 20 years. He also worked for the Lower Merion Township for the past 20 years until his retirement in January. 
 Survivors include his daughter, La'Shawn; two sisters, Alberta Butler of Newport, R.I., and Harriett Mendes of New Bedford; two brothers, Francis Mendes of New Bedford and Charles Mendes of Los Angeles; a granddaughter, La'Tanya; a godson, Donte; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law; and a host of family and friends. 
 He was the brother of the late Charlotte Mendes. 
 Funeral services were held at the Beckett-Brown Funeral Home Inc., 5618 Baynton St.
