George was a long-standing member of the Cape Verdean Club in Falmouth, where he held many offices including secretary, treasurer, and president. He was also a communicant of St. Anthony's Church and volunteered as an usher for many years. In 1976, he served on the town of Falmouth Bicentennial Committee. He enjoyed playing golf and, in his earlier years, was known to go hunting. One of George's many talents was his singing and dancing.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Antoinette "Toni" Fitch of Cambridge, Louisa "Bootsie" Barboza-Norvell of Dayton, Ohio, Marguerite "Nancy" Gomes of Harwich and Georgina "Gina" Barboza of Hyannis; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Anthony of New Bedford, Louis of Dorchester, Lawrence "Jake" of Randolph, and Stanley of Cranston, R.I.; four sisters, Lia Gonsalves of East Providence, R.I., Marie Martins of Germantown, Md., Yvonne "Bubbles" Barboza of Providence, R.I., and Antonia Gonsalves of Taunton. Also surviving are several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
