20-year-old Marco Pereira Vaz had been living for approximately one year in France with his father, and had returned to Portugal to take care of his personal documents. Vaz apparently went out Saturday night with his 17-year-old brother Adilson. The two walked around the neighborhoods of Quinto do Mocho and Sacavém, and went to the “Salão,” an abandoned store where the local Cape Verdean community holds parties on weekends. The party broke up when Marco became involved in a fight over long-standing problems with another young man who lives in the neighborhood and who is allegedly the member of a rival group. After the party, the members of the rival gang forced their way into Marco’s home and killed him. The victim’s brother told journalists that the killers entered their home through the window, shot Marco in the leg and proceeded to stone him to death. “All of them came in through the window,” said Adilson. Marco’s mother, Bemvinda Semedo Pereira, said the group was made up of about ten individuals. In addition to the death of Marco, another five individuals with ages ranging between 16 and 21 were injured. The victims were taken to Curry Cabral Hospital, Santa Maria Hospital and the Prior Velho Red Cross and are out of danger. At the scene of the crime, Judiciary Police found various empty bullet casings and traces of blood that will be analyzed. Authorities are believed to have identified the killers. Quinta do Mocho is one of the most problematic neighborhoods in the Lisbon suburb of Loures. The local population has repeatedly complained about the lack of safety and shortage of police patrols. |
