MENDES ![]() WESTWOOD, Calif. --> Born in New Bedford, Mass., the son of the late Albert and Majorie Wainer Mendes, he lived in the city until 1951, when he joined the Marine Corps. Mr. Mendes was wounded in action and received several distinguished commendations, including the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He worked for the Postal Service until he retired in 1988. He was a deacon at Tabernacle of Holiness Church and later attended the Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. Survivors include his widow; three daughters, Cheryl Dias of Durham, N.C., Stella Lewis of Roseville and Joy G. Gaines of Ingelwood; two sons, Willie Lewis of Irvine and Phillip Lewis of Camarillo; two sisters, Alberta Butler of Newport, R.I., and Harriet Mendes of New Bedford; a brother, Francis Mendes of New Bedford; nine grandchildren, Leslie Lewis, Tiffany Dias, Rodney Lewis, Steven Lewis, Julius Lewis, Melvin Lewis, Derrick Lewis, Jason Lewis and Bryce Chatman; four great-grandchildren, Ashley Lewis, Courtney Lewis, Morgan Lewis and Cameron Lewis; a daughter-in-law, Gayle Lewis; three step-granddaughters, Tamala, Jackie and Gina; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was the brother of the late Charlotte Mendes and Gilbert Mendes. Arrangements were by the Harrison-Ross Mortuary, View Park Chapel, Los Angeles.
