He was the husband of Lelia (Lomba) Goncalves and son of the late Manuel and Matilde (Lomba) Goncalves. He was born in Santa Ana, Brava, Cape Verde, and lived in New Bedford for most of his life. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. He was employed by Exxon Corp. for many years until he retired in 1986. Mr. Goncalves served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Our Lady of the Assumption Church Building and Maintenance Committee and was treasurer of the Exxon Annuitant Club. He was an avid reader who enjoyed his computer and many other hobbies, and he enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his widow; two sons, Dr. Antonio M. Goncalves and his wife Tina, of New Bedford and Manuel A. Goncalves and his wife, Jeana, of New Bedford; a daughter, Elizabeth Goncalves of New Bedford; two brothers, Lawrence Goncalves and Joao Goncalves, both of New Bedford; his twin sister, Ana Valles of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jenna Goncalves, Annabella Goncalves, Michaela Pacheco and Lelia Goncalves; and many nieces and nephews. His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church; burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St. |
