David F. Gomes

 HAMPTON, Va. -- David Frank Gomes, 55, formerly of New Bedford, Mass., died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Linda Gomes. 
 Born in New Bedford, Feb. 4, 1945, he was the son of Eva Gomes Lopes of New Bedford and the late Francis Gomes. 
 Affectionately known as "Day-Day" by his family and close friends, and "Poppa David" by his grandsons, he graduated from New Bedford High School. 
 He enlisted in the Army shortly after graduating and served for four years. After his tour of duty, he moved to Hampton and was employed by the Newport News Shipyard for a number of years, and later with Shepherd Enterprise. He attended Thomas Nelson Community College. 
 Mr. Gomes was known for his love of track and other sports. In high school, he was known for his outstanding performance in track, receiving many trophies and setting many records. He continued his outstanding performance in his willingness to share his track experience with others. 
 Survivors include his widow; his mother; a daughter, Natasha L. Gomes; a son, David F. Gomes II of Panorama City, Calif.; three sisters, Florence Blake, Janice Aruda and Geraldine Martinez, all of Massachusetts; a brother, Joseph Gomes of Massachusetts; an aunt, Dot; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece whom he named "Choo Choo," Kandida Martinez; a goddaughter/niece, Danielle; many friends, including Carlton Chumack of New Bedford; four grandsons; two stepsons, Jesse Wells and Emmanuel Wells; two stepdaughters, Gladys Wells and Belinda Jackson; and seven stepgrandchildren. 
 He was the father of the late Timothy Gomes. 
 His funeral services were held April 29 at Spiritual Aid Way of the Cross, Hampton; burial was in Hampton Memorial gardens with military honors. 
 Arrangements were by the Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel, Hampton.
