Newport

JOSEPH ANTONE, 85, of 5 Bradford Ave., a Navy public works employee before retiring, died Sunday at Newport Hospital.

He was the husband of Mary Lou (Gonsalves) Antone of Newport; they had been married for 49 years. Born in Newport on Jan. 23, 1917, he was a son of the late Martin and Josephine (Monteiro) Antone.

Mr. Antone had worked at the Newport Navy Base, in the Public Works Department, before he retired. He previously had worked for the Laborers Union, and during the Depression, had been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. 

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in France and North Africa.

He was a member and former treasurer of the Cape Verdean Club of Newport, and a former member of the Beaver AC.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Joseph Antone Jr. and James Antone, both of Newport; four daughters, Cynthia Oliveira of Pawtucket, Brenda Boyd of Middletown and Cathleen Fontes and Susan Antone, both of Newport; three brothers, Albert Antone of Middletown, Manuel Antone of Lawton, Okla., and Martin Antone of Newport; two sisters, Marie Hines of Middletown and Josephine Fields of Newport; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late John and Francis Antone.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 8 a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Joseph Church, Broadway at Mann Avenue. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown.
