George Barboza, served in World War II

FALMOUTH - George Canto Barboza, 93, of East Falmouth, died Thursday, Jan. 3 at Falmouth Hospital. 

He was the husband of Eufemia “Gi-Gi” (Resendes) Barboza for 41 years. 

Born in East Falmouth, Mr. Barboza served in the Army in World War II. He worked in Ohio for many years in the steel mills as a welder, grinder, and painter. He returned to Falmouth and worked as a barber until his retirement. In the late ‘60s he owned the Sugar Bowl, a snack bar he later turned into B& P Liquors, which he and the late Carlo Pena Sr. co-owned. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, volunteered as a church usher for many years, and was a member of the Cape Verdean Club. 

Besides his wife, he leaves his four daughters, Antoinette Fitch of Cambridge, Louisa Barboza-Norvell of Dayton, Ohio, Marguerite Gomes of Harwich, and Georgina Barboza of Hyannis; four brothers, Anthony Barboza of New Bedford, Louis Barboza of Dorchester, Lawrence Barboza of Randolph and Stanley Barboza of Cranston, R.I.; four sisters, Lia Gonsalves of East Providence, R.I., Marie Martins of Germantown, Md., Yvonne Barboza of Providence, R.I. and Antonia Gonsalves of Taunton; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. 

A funeral Mass was held Monday, Jan. 6 at St. Anthony’s Church in East Falmouth, followed by burial in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
